OK, roll up, roll up - do we think the Revival is happening?

We will continue to review plans for the Goodwood Revival, in the hope that this will be able to go ahead as planned, as well as looking forward to the rescheduled 78th Members’ Meeting and Festival of Speed.

Glad it wasn't me starting this thread, I had hoped someone else would! In short, no, I don't think it will happen.
Full disclosure - I don't have any inside information, I am a GRRC Member, but that is as far as it goes.
I can't see there being enough time from now until September to get everything organised. Too many variables too, even if planning had continued for the last three months, I guess they couldn't be certain of drivers and cars being 'in-place' as expected in September.
As it happens, I don't see the CV-19 position having changed at all in the last couple of months. I don't see that changing in the comming months either.
If you read the MotorSportUK documentation, it doesn't seem very workable. I admire their efforts to get things back on track (no pun intended), but marshals not being able to approach cars and relying on thumbs up signals doesn't seem like it will work. We could start a whole new thread on the health issues.
My position here is I don't presently have a hotel or tickets booked (and due to incomming work collapsing, I don't really have the cash to 'invest' in a weekend of motorsport at this stage).
I feel for those (on other Revival threads on PH) that were coming from Canada etc. trip of a lifetime and all on hold.
I think the best all-round would be for some certainty, Goodwood should just announce the cancellation of all events this year. Refunds for those who want or need the cash back. I realise this will leave Goodwood in a bad situation, but no more than any other entertainments business.
Mentioned before, but Members are all at least £240 down before we start as we won't get much for our membership fees this year. I can live with that, GW can hang on to my cash if it helps, but I think I would like to see SIGNIFICANT discounts on next years membership fees (there are already many people 'mentioning' the benefits we do or don't get for that fee).
I still need to get tickets for MM78 - now for next year. I was pretty certain that it wan't happening so didn't buy the tickets earlier in the year. It was a sell-out for the Saturday at least, so hopefully some people will be returning tickets for refunds. I would even pay GW for those now, I don't think GW will go out of business.
I am wary of buying tickets for Revival at present. Other than the financial position, I can't be certain it will go ahead, or be rescheduled, and I may or may not be able to go. Equally, I don't want to mis out. I have been nowhere this year and Mrs NIFAN (I nearly put Mrs No Ideas - but realised I would be in serious trouble) could do with me going away to GW for a break.

Further.. if it does go ahead...
I seem to remember something in the newsletter implying the theme might be related to VE day. Maybe I misinterpreted that, and it was a 'spoof' newspaper from around VE day. I would think it is too long after the event (as in too long after 8th May 2020, not 1945!).
I hope for a decent theme... I think last years' seemed a bit flat.
I suppose it would need to be a major event from 1960 or '61 if it gets moved to next year. Can't think of anything obvious that hasn't already been done.

I don't mind GW holding onto my money for all events this year and transferring my tickets to next year but if there is no acknowledgement (through a fee reduction, increased tickets discount for one or more future years or something similar) that I have derived zero benefit from my membership this year, I may think twice about renewing, not that it will matter as they have a long waiting list so will easily replace me.Edited by No ideas for a name on Tuesday 19th May 10:46
Other than the MM, I find the GW events too crowded and as a result less enjoyable than they used to be so may divert my attention to other events anyway.

Yes this is the trouble, we won't be missed. There will be plenty to take our places.Other than the MM, I find the GW events too crowded and as a result less enjoyable than they used to be so may divert my attention to other events anyway.
The crowding has done it for me - already my partner won't come as though she likes motor racing, she can't cope with the crowds. That already takes something away from the event.
I am not sure on other events... I tried the Silverstone classic once, but found that a bit lacking. Racing was fine, but I don't really like the venue. I did end up getting parked in the in field without having to pay an arm and a leg extra for the privelidge which was nice.
Which other events would you be recommending?
I also feel a bit 'out of it' as living around a four hour drive from Goodwood, I can't just pop in or use the Kennels etc. That isn't Goodwood's fault of course.
I had an idea once... I thought that after a certain number of years in the GRRC, Members could 'graduate' to a higher grade with more benefits due to their loyalty over say 10-15 years.. we could be called 'Fellows'. But then someone shot that down.

Have you tried any of the overseas events?
Ticket prices are a fraction of those GW charge which means a weekend at, eg, Spa Classic is cheaper than going to one of the GW even with ferry, etc costs

I do know I guy I used to work with always went to the Belgian GP as he said it was cheaper than the British F1 at Silverstone - also more of an adventure.
F1 isn't my thing, but Spa Classic might be a good call. I may well look at that, might make a nice break with my other half too.
Can I pay over the odds to be a 'Member' at Spa and get nothing for it?
Can I pay £150 for an SRRC badge for my car?
I was booked to go to the Grand Prix De L'Age D'Or in June this year (unfortunately cancelled). A 3 day ticket with paddock and grandstand access was EUR 20 (twenty - that's not a typo)
Which they are refunding ...
Peter Auto run this other events - https://peterauto.peter.fr/en/2020-peter-auto-cale...
Circuit des Remparts in Angouleme is also worth a visit although that is fairly crowded and is on or around the same weekend as the Revival

I know someone who works on the organisation of the 3 events, and asked him earlier in the year if he had any insider information. Sadly not - just the usual we're still hoping. Mind you, my e-mail was dated 22 March and the lockdown started the next day.
Even if the Revival does take place, I feel many regular attendees will give it a miss. I'm sure the posers who only go to "be seen" in the Village will not be there. That all means that ticket availability will not be an issue. As for hotels, I've got one reserved which can be cancelled up to 2 days notice.
Personally, my problem is getting there. I live in Ireland, and usually it's FlyBe to Southampton, but not this year for obvious reasons. Eastern Airlines now fly once a day, but I really don't want to sit next to someone who could be carrying the bloody thing. The alternative is the ferry - social distancing is not a problem there, but you can be sure that if restrictions have been eased substantially by September the ferries will be clogged with people trying to have an end-of-summer holiday in GB.
I missed last year (under the surgeon's knife) and was looking forward to 2020. I give it 10% chance at best.

Um!!
As a general rule in life I'm the eternal optimist, but in this case, I cant see this happening. Looks like the UK has just introduced lock down for everyone arriving from overseas, that clearly doesn't work for the 6 of us coming from Canada. So far the 6 of us have canceled our WEC Sebring event, Le Mans, first time in years, Canadian GP and now it looks like the Revival might not happen. FU......
If I wasn't such a fu..ing petrol head I start a Stamp collecting hobby.
My own Racing season is in the toilet, cars ready, just needs installing in the trailer.

My other concern is, if it does go ahead what sort of event is it going to be? One of the attractions of Goodwood for us is all the side events, its a hell of a way to travel to a potentially cut down event. All speculation of course.
We have tickets for this year, and this is one thing I'm worried about. I think I'd rather they cancelled the event and transferred our tickets to 2021 rather than them provide a castrated version of the Revival.MikeT66 said:

The noises I'm getting from our group that's our position. For us we want to experiance the whole menu of events not the Revival on a diet. The waiting game is torture.
Sadly unless the Government dramatically relax the tules on mass gatherings I cannot see any major Motor Sport events taking place this side of Christmas.
We’ve missed 1 Revival In 20 years and have never missed Members so we are gutted but I’d rather be safe than sorry !!
Just feel for Goodwood .

I watch the BBC news and get this mixed message of whats happening, but what we dont get 4000 miles away in central Alberta is a sense of the feeling on the ground in the UK.
To go from where we are to where things needs to be in less than 12 weeks looks a huge step and based on the baby steps our governments are making I just dont see it happening.

First post here...
I keep looking at their website to see if it has been cancelled but nothing yet.
I was really looking forward to this event as the tickets were bought for a big birthday of mine but if the event is going to be a diluted version of what I had in my mind, I'm not sure I want it to go ahead and would rather a refund and treat myself to something and then maybe try another year.
I have just seen that the Great North Run, which would have been the same weekend has been cancelled and although probably harder to socially distance, I just can't see how any large outdoor event can go ahead fully this year... Very sad!
