Me and the Mrs are really looking forward to the revival but as always have left the dress until the last minute.

Any tips on where we can hire/buy ww2 dress from? We are based Derby/Nottingham if there’s anywhere local.

Any help much appreciated

What on earth has WW2 got to do with Goodwood, where racing started in 1948?

That’s true that racing didn’t start at Goodwood until 48 but during the war the location of the track served as an airfield which the remaining runways are in the infield. Several race tracks in both the US and UK were started on former WW2 air bases. Along the front straight just past start/ finish there is The Mess, The Barracks, and The Officer’s Club which are all staffed by re enactors in full WW2 attire. My wife and I celebrated our first anniversary at Revival last year and spent Saturday in The Barracks. Very cool as the re enactors were quite knowledgeable and kept in character all day. Access to this area is restricted as you need to have the proper hospitality pass etc.

Sorry, I was in Miserable Old Git mode.
I just find it hypocritical (on Goodwood's part!) that it's fine to turn up in Fancy dress out of the period when racing took place there, but if I turned up dressed as I went to races in the early 60s (jeans and T-shirt) it would be frowned upon.

Not being local I can't help on your choices unfortunately. I did see a rather nifty 1950s USSR fighter pilot's pressure suit for sale in a London market, but it would have been a very snug fit for me.

Enjoy the racing, however you are dressed.

So

Stripy pyjamas might be a cheap but rather distasteful dress....

.... but don't forget to wear a tie with your PJ's otherwise you won't be able to access the paddock and other areas with a dress code hehe

1st year I went in chinos, khaki shirt, tie at a jaunty angle, American A2 leather jacket. Khaki cap, boots, for an American airman off duty look. Partner wore Vintage Chanel.

Last year I was in a brown boiler suit, this year it’s DM boots, old dark suit, grandad shirt, neckerchief and a black trilby, red braces.

I didn’t wear any military insignia as I feel it’s a little disrespectful to those that have actually served, a bit ‘walt’ I think is the term.

You will see a lot of military uniforms...

Lots of ladies go as Landgirls, or Rosy the riveter, dungarees etc. Looks great.

Men can go in a boiler suit, shirt, flat hat.

It’s NOT fancy dress, nor, for the love of all things holey, if you wore mini skirts in the 1960s, DONT wear them in 2019. Dress for the age you are now.

Ladies can wear a tea dress, hair in a vintage style, bit redder lips than usual, and look fabulous.

Google Goodwood Revival best dressed....

But for the love of god (& your bank account) don’t go vintage shopping in Chichester, even the charity shops have cottoned on they can ask £250 for a tweed jacket next week & someone will pay it)

Certainly make the effort and FFS, please don't go as a comedy Elvis or Beatle etc! smile

Less is more for fellas - a white boiler suit from Wickes with a shirt, tie and flat cap will suffice or tweed jacket and flat cap and a tie.....you'll see all sorts from the above to fellas in vintage YSL suits with the Birds in vintage Dior or Channel, which is to be encouraged! smile

What size are you btw? I have a couple of Vintage tweed jackets that living the high life has put pay to me fitting into this year.....they're around the 48 chest size...

You're welcome to cross my palms with silver for these for a lot less than £250!

Just to note that my Father was still in his (WWII) Navy Fleet Air Arm uniform in 1948... so its not that anachronistic...

And historical accuracy is obviously important to these racegoers

Thanks so much for the offer of the tweeds. I am a 46 but with a 33 waist so it would bury me.

I think if going to pick up a few traditional bits from here and there.

No ideas for a name

Kitten Von Mew... 1940's pin-up style entertainer. Paid to be there by Goodwood I believe.

I'm coming to my first Revival from the US. I'm going with the tweed jacket, shirt, tie, (have a cravat if I'm feeling like it), waistcoat in reserve, fedora/trilby style felt hat and period appropriate trousers. I got the jacket, 3x shirts, 3x ties and 2x trousers from local charity shops for about forty quid tops. I think my whole outfit was less than 100 GBP. I've got my regular tan leather shoes that are very comfy for what I am expecting to be a lot of walking.

(Just got to get through Hurricane Dorian first.....)

It's good to see that His Grace believes in maintaining standards.
