I've fancied going to Goodwood FOS for quite a while. I know they take volunteers and also have their own marshals club. Before I approach them directly, does anyone here already marshal or volunteer? If so, how do you find it?
they are always advertising for volunteer stewards before the events .... surprised you havent seen the ads! Lynchie999 said:

I have seen from the website about stewards but I would be more interested in track or pit marshalling. Their setup looks a bit different from the likes of Donington and Silverstone though, so I thought I would ask if anyone on here does it.

volunteers at FOS have to pay the ticket price as a deposit, marshall for 1/2 a day and have the rest of the day free. your deposit is returned afterwards.
be cautious if you're hoping to see everything, because as a volunteer marshall you could end up directing traffic in a carpark. there are appeals for volunteers every year.

I had seen the thing about having to pay for tickets up front and then requesting a refund. Is that for track marshals too? be cautious if you're hoping to see everything, because as a volunteer marshall you could end up directing traffic in a carpark. there are appeals for volunteers every year.
I hope the marshals that I see on wet and windy or boiling hot bilstering sun posts from 8am until 8pm every weekend I race get first pick to marshal an event like this. I know the ones at Donington couldn't go to FOS as they were doing a invaluable job for me and my fellow competitors. Luckliy I didn't join them at any post over the weekend but it was close a few times!
So you have 2 things here.
The volunteers:
You pay the entrance price for the weeekend do some shifts marshalling crowds, providing advice, driving golf buggies and other random tasks. Complete your allocated shift each day and you get your money back, if you live over 20miles away (I think) you can camp for free.
The Marshalls:
The Goodwood marshals club provide assistance to both events and I believe may be supplemented by other volunteer marshal’s from across the UK. You can join them and marshal the various track days throughout the year learning how to be a marshal get to a certain standard and I believe you can then work FOS/Revival.

I was a grandstand steward at the FOS around 8 years ago. It was a paid position and whilst the 3 days were quite tiring (on site for around 5.30am IIRC) the job itself just involved checking tickets on entry to the grandstand and I got a great view of the hill all weekend.

Thanks for all the replies. I am.a BMMC and MSA member already. I have contacted the Goodwood Marshals club to ask if they take Marshals from elsewhere. Haven't had a response as yet but these things can take time.
Hi,As far as I'm aware, the marshalling at Goodwood events is controlled by the BARC. Certainly always was when I marshalled there.
Also AFAIK you'll need to get your trainee status out of the way before you'll be accepted for consideration, same as some other high profile events such as GP, etc.

Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Revival are organised by BARC (Thruxton) not by Goodwood Marshals Club (who can of course apply to marshal at the events) so you need to be an accredited marshal with an MSA licence in order to be considered for any of the trackside posts. I can't answer for any other non trackside positions.
