Some of the planes in the display area just next to the moving motor show are pretty big. Anyone know how they get them there? There doesn''t seem to be a route to tow them from the airfield, and to me, the fairways on the golf course didn't look big enough to be a runway! Anyone got any inside info? smile

Aircraft that can land on grass usually use Goodwood Aerodrome, about 1 mile from Goodwood House. Bigger aircraft fly in from airfields further afield. The Red Arrows are based at Farnborough.

The fixed-wing stuff is flown in onto the grass in the area of the golf course and then towed from there according to the pilot-blokes I talked to last year.

I thought they were based at RAF Scampton.

Thanks, I'm sure that would be quite fun to watch!

Not this weekend they aren't.

I watched them come in and land at Farnborough this afternoon.

They were at Farnborough for one night. They're already back at Scampton!

In answer to the original question - the estate is fairly empty and roomy outside of FoS time so there's plenty of space to get stuff in on trailers, or indeed flown in and parked. It's quite fun going up to the racecourse in the weeks preceeding this weekend as you get to see so much of it, and I swear every year the sculpture must be one of Sussex's best kept secrets!

Certainly the first year they had the planes there they got a special licence from the CAA for a temporary airfield in the field that is then used as a car park. They then tow the aircraft using a landrover over the golf course.
