I hope you guys don't mind me butting into your forum but I need some advice..
The plan is to surprise fella with trip from Meath Ireland to Goodwood Revival.
I know he'd rather bring his car - is fishguard the port I want to arrive at?
But he also works everyday so we may have to fly instead, only reasonably priced hotels (that still have availability) are miles away so huge taxi costs.
I don't know yet specifically what advice I need but anything anyone has to offer would be much appreciated!

fly into Gatwick if you can, then find a hotel somewhere nearby a mainline train station... Guildford - it has a direct train from gatwick AND links down to chichester... and hop on the train to chichester... jobs a good 'un ...

Or alternatively fly to Southampton. Trains from S'ton go direct to Chichester and take about an hour.

I would suggest flying to Southampton and finding acomadation around Fareham, hamble or Southampton.

As a regular traveller to ROI, my plan would be to book a flight on one of Mr.O'Leary's aeroplanes into Gatwick (good rates from Dublin) and hire a car for the period. Easy route from Gatwick to the Chichester area where you will find B&B or hotel accommodation within 20 miles of Goodwood. Look to the north of Goodwood, around Petersfield or Petworth. Flights into Southampton are infrequent and expensive so best avoided. See you there!

should have mentioned also that the drive from Fishguard or Pembroke is around 4 hrs to Sussex/Hampshire and is, in my opinion, a right royal pain. The ferry times are also not entirely favourable. I have done it a few times out of necessity but try to avoid.
