FoS commute from Portsmouth
Discussion
Looking for some advice from some FoS veterans.
We're going this year for the first time (well overdue). My inclination is to camp on site, my friend wants to stay in a hotel in Portsmouth (which looks about as close as we're going to get at a half sensible price).
My worry is that commuting in and out of the site will be a nightmare, unless we set off at stupid o'clock, but I'm not sure whether this is the reality. Is there stuff happening in the evenings that makes staying essential?
Can anyone advise?

If it was me I'd find a nice country Pub B&B North of Goodwood towards Midhurst. It'll be a much nicer place to be and I'm not convinced of the secure parking facilities of budget hotels in Portsmouth.
+1 I would certainly avoid the Portsmouth park hotel. I think it was a Hilton when I stayed there with work for the revival a couple of years ago. Bad service, overpriced food and drink (never seen prices so high in a hotel of its standard) and not near any alternative dining or drinking establishments. Commuting from Portsmouth to the FoS isn't a problem. I'd say avoid the A27 and take the back roads. The FoS closes early evening (unless you're going to one of the Balls).
Hotel wise, I'd suggest something like the Holiday Inn Express in Gunwharf Quays, where there's lots of restaurants and bars to visit when you get back.
Another option might be The Langstone Hotel on Hayling Island, which is a bit nearer to Goodwood.
