I have a couple of invites through work, what actually goes on at the event? Ive had a look on the website and can see tickets has almost sold out. Has anybody been on a Friday? That will be the only day I can make it.

Everyone has a good time and most wear something they wouldn't normally put on to watch motor sport.

The walk around the pits is brilliant, as are all the side shows, bands, motor show, planes, racing and the overall atmosphere is great.

Thanks for the reply, I did have a look at the website but wanted some real feedback from somebody who has been before. Looking forward to it

Been going since 1999 so that's... 14 years. We stay all 3 x days, it's the highlight of the motoring year for me. Hard to describe except it's all about racing classic cars not modern stuff. Its the best classic event anywhere and believe me they actually race the cars- oh and it gets very, very crowded! So try to get grandstand seats... Dress appropriately, get there early and leave late then enjoy yourself.

Thanks for the reply, I think the invite includes some hospitality in a marquee near the track, im waiting for full details. Do many people dress in normal modern clothes? Or do the majority dress in period attire?

Dress in modern and you'll feel like a party pooper. It's obvious that the idea is to get into the spirit of it and it s easy for blokes; chinos, a blazer, brogues and no excuses, especially if you've been invited so not paying for the tickets ... Or go the full hog but please no fancy dress Elvis costumes. rolleyes just use Google there are millions of pictures of people dressed for Goodwood so it's not hard.

Friday is practise and qualifying so I would check the program and see which ones you want to watch. There's lots of things going on outside the track with music, static displays and actors wandering around.

Inside the track even if you don't have a paddock pass to get in to the central paddock you can still walk around the outside and there are more paddocks further infield you can get to (including the bikes). then there's the airplane concours d'elegance and Motor show and you can also do some celebrity spotting if that's your thing. I'd do this when there are things on track that you don't fancy watching. It gets pretty busy round the start/finish side of the track but if you fancy the walk you can walk right around the track for a different view of the track.

Over the road there's more stalls and also the public car park where they bring all the pre 66 stuff together and is great to just wander through.

I agree with the others that its worth making the effort to get dressed up; the vast majority of visitors do and it really is integral to the whole event.

Here are my pictures from last year to give you a feel for the event.

It's the greatest classic car (event of it's kind) in the world.
It's awesome, been every year since 2001.

I'm not going to take offence to that remark;)

The Griff is not my daily driver but it's usually out at least once a week - I find that keeps it running sweetly. It's actually been very good for reliability while I've had it

Snap - had mine from new since '99 and it's only failed twice; once was because we hadn't pressed the chip in firmly after mark Adams had been doing his stuff and the other time the immobiliser decided to play up. Other than that it's probably been the most reliable of my cars over the last 14 years biglaugh

Our first time this year, can I confirm that the centre is open to all, but certain parts of the Paddock you need a pass for?
Thanks

Yes, you can get to the inside of the track and walk round the paddock and be right next to the more ordinary* cars but you can't get inside the paddock where the supercars are without a special pass.
That said, you can stand against the fence of the supercar paddock and be within a few feet of the cars, so it's not a massive issue.

  • relative term, this is Goodwood and nothing is very ordinary!

If by centre you mean infield, that's always been the case. Just use the public tunnel to access the inside of the track. If you mean the paddock, there's a central paddock and an outer paddock. You need a paddock pass (and be dressed appropriately) to access the central paddock, again that's unchanged.
