Goodwood to Celebrate the Best of the First 20 Years of the Festival of Speed in 2013
The 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed (5-7 July) theme will celebrate the best of the first 20 years of this, the world’s most popular motor sport and car culture event.
Next summer’s Festival of Speed will focus on highlights from the Goodwood event’s glittering history. The biggest, best, fastest, loudest and most outrageous vehicles of all time will be invited back to West Sussex in early July 2013 for a weekend not to be missed.
Star cars and motorcycles, plus drivers and riders from each of the world’s major motor sport disciplines, past and present, will be featured at Goodwood, including champions from Formula 1, Indycar, the World Rally Championship, Superbikes, NASCAR, World Sports Cars and Touring Cars.
1993-2012
Goodwood plans to recapture many of the outstanding Festival of Speed moments from the 1993-2012 era, whether that’s great cars from the USA and elsewhere making a rare return to the UK; or famous car/driver pairings reunited.
The Festival will see all manner of memorable - and often outrageous - contraptions on the 1.16-mile hillclimb. Expect to see truly diverse range of vehicles, from pioneering steam cars to Dakar trucks – and perhaps even a Soapbox racer or two – in additional to historic dragsters doing burn-outs outside Goodwood House. Goodwood also hopes to have the newly-completed and running Bloodhound Land Speed Record car on display just days before its trip to South Africa for the land speed record attempt.
MICHELIN SUPERCAR PADDOCK
The Michelin Supercar Paddock will once again feature a mouth-watering selection of the world’s most recent and sought-after high performance cars, as well as offering the rare chance to see them in action on Goodwood’s famous hillclimb.
At the top of the Hill, Goodwood is planning significant layout and content developments to the Top Paddock and Forest Rally Stage, which will once more feature the greatest cars and drivers from the history of rallying.
TWO WHEELS
On two wheels, motorcycles will again provide some of the most dramatic action of the Festival weekend, with world champion riders aboard the most iconic machines of the last century. Additionally, for the first time, a dedicated area will provide a special focus for the motorcycle content and for riders attending the Festival in the popular exhibition site.
Away from the action on the Hill, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance will provide a bastion of cultured calm as always, with some of the world’s most extraordinary vehicles displayed in relaxed surroundings, accompanied by a soundtrack of fine jazz. As on the Hill, the selection of cars on the Cartier Lawn will celebrate the very best content from the first 20 years of the Festival of Speed.
GAS
The immensely popular Goodwood Action Sports (GAS) Arena will be bigger and better than ever, offering yet more high-octane two-wheeled entertainment. Also enlarged and improved for 2013 will be the Aviation Exhibition, which will be more centrally located within the Festival of Speed site to further reinforce Goodwood’s indelible links with aviation and its history.
All this, along with a host of vehicles and competitors new to Goodwood, and a number of unexpected treats, will provide a fitting birthday party for the world’s greatest celebration of motor sport history and car culture.
LORD MARCH
Goodwood Festival of Speed founder Lord March says: “I really can’t believe that we’ve been staging the Festival of Speed for 20 years already; the time has simply flown by! I wasn’t too certain if anyone would be interested in coming along to our very first event back in 1993. We expected around 2,500 people, and over 25,000 turned up! Today the Festival attracts over 185,000 enthusiastic and knowledgeable spectators, which I just could not have imagined way back in 1993. I think it is safe to say that the event now looks like it is here to stay!”
HAVE YOUR SAY
On its dedicated Festival of Speed Facebook page, Goodwood is inviting fans of the event to submit their thoughts and ideas of the highlights from the past 20 years that they might like to see at next July’s Festival, including views on which of the annual Central Feature displays most stands out in the memories of these enthusiasts.
Sounds fantastic, I'm loving the idea of the highlights of the past 20 festivals.
I'm excited already, our hotels are already booked .
What/who would you like to see return, or make its/their debut?.

Does anyone know if Lord March is still planning on building the new road the effectively turns the hill climb into a "loop", effectively meaning they do not have to close the hill to allow the cars to return.
I am sure I read that this was going to happen a couple of years back.
We've pretty much done that and use it on Thursday for the moving motor show.. Need more time to be able to run it for FoS though as we use some of the public roads at present. We also feel that the cars waiting at the top and then coming down slowly is as much part of the show as them screaming to the top... I am sure I read that this was going to happen a couple of years back.
Cheers,
J

Great list. For me the event had lost a bit of it's appeal recently and seemed to have sold out to coorperate guff and become a family fun day etc..Lets hope 2013 theme of highlights from last 20 years sees Goodwood focus strongly on the best car/driver combos giving it the beans. Please, please feature a strong Hillclimb contingent a la current British Championship guys, ( may clash with a round? ), as they have never featured in a big way and should be great to watch and poss set a new record? Others from me,
BHC - Goulds, Forces, GWR, DJ's etc..
Justin Law - Silk Cut Jag
Mazda 787b?
Anything CanAm
Gary Ward - Anything noisey and quick
Groub B - Walter Rohl
Vulcan - I think now impossible - replace with something low flying fast and noisey
ACDC, Led Zepp, Foos etc.. - Wouldn't it be great to feature an early evening gig as the back drop to a Top 10 run off!
PS. Goodwood - Please go easy on BMX's, garden furniture vendors, etc.. All very nice but bugger all to do with speed and not what you travel miles to see and spend a small fortune on viewing.

I know part of the fun for me is walking miles over dale and down ogling the cars in the public car park.
A bit 'elitist' and taking the randomness fun bit out but what about an area near the 'entrances' with some of the more 'interesting' cars from Jo public (I'll be taking the Previa BTW....)....just a thought, as you were...
Look forward to seeing you there. Paul.

Yeah, few minor corrections I'd suggest:
Damon first raced the FW15C, though he did help develop the FW14B.
Schumacher raced the C11 and C291. His only victory was in the C291 at Autopolis in 1991.
Mansell didn't race the 850, but he did have a punt in a couple of Mondeos down the years.
I'd suggest the BT46B is more worthwhile than the conventional BT46.
I totally approve of your list though - plenty of awesome machinery there :-)
