A very wet day with lots of offs involving lots of expensive cars - but still fun and wondering if anyone took photos

I attended the time trials on the 7th. It was very wet indeed early on but the rain did relent just before lunch which was something i suppose. Some real nice cars taking part. And yes there were some off's. Most notable was that MkI Escort. Looked a great car, went like stink but he lost it on a time trial just before lunch. Front end was totalled and the back stoved in. So i guess he spun round the back of the circuit somewhere.

Only grabbed a couple of pics and only posted 3 of those to Flickr:

Robert, that is a sublime set of photos you have taken. Superb panning, pin sharp and great composition. That's what i want to do one day.
Do you mind me asking what lens you use with the 7D? I'm just starting out with the photography, only started in May this year. Have been using a 500D and an EFS 55-250 IS. But just sold the 55-250 and bought a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 plus the 1.4x teleconvertor. Hoping it may help a bit.

Thanks for the compliments!

In the main I use a Canon 100-400mm it's a very good lens. With the use mine gets the locking ring, which is a felt type material tends to break down and inevitably dust and damp can get in.

I received advice on Canon forum to try using it with the image stablisation turned off, with that an auto focus the lens can't keep up especially with cars. Certainly I have found the quality of pictures has improved.

On the Aston Martin day I did have problems with damp on the 100 - 400 and had to resort to my 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4 extender.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask away!

Hi Robert, Have a few questions for you.

So you shoot your images with IS turned off now? Is that with 100-300 and 70-200 +1.4?

The 55-250 was supposed to have auto detection of panning but i found my images improved a lot once i stopped using IS. My only concern now is the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 is apparently a heavy lens and has no stabilisation. Gulp just hope i haven't made a mistake.

Do you have an official photographers pass for the circuit or do just shoot from the public areas? I notice there a few people with the green hi-vis jackets which allows them to get a much better vantage point. Especially for cars coming out of the chicane. They can get down low, where as the public area is much higher.

So much to learn.

To answer your questions!

I have IS turned of on both lenses though I suspect the 70-200 might cope. The other thing I do is make use of monopod which again helps with stability.

The vast majority of my pictures come from the public areas, though I have signed on to get the other side of the fence on a few occasions. It is more difficult to sign on for sprints etc as those events are run under an MSA permit.
