I'm planning early smile

I am taking my Dad to the Revival for his 70th, and treating him to the full works [to and from in a classic car, GRRC bits and bobs etc] and am trying to think of places where both him and me can rent / buy clothes from to 'fit in' with the rest of the people there. Period dress [stop the schoolboy sniggering!] is obviously the thing to wear, but where do you get them from? Is it a case of rummaging through charity shops or are there dedicated palces for this type of thing, and if so can you provide links / numbers to ease my search?

Cheers in advance

Fancy dress/ dressing up costume shops basicly. Many specialise in the Revival around the local area of Goodwood.

I think if you google Goodwood Revival there are lots of shops that come up who specialise in selling and hiring the outfits as its now become big business. However, I do enjoy the charity shop rummage for gems!

Fancy Dress shops will make you stick out like a sore thumb.. charity shops or some well selected current clothing will be perfect though.. Google '50's mens fashions' for a good guide on how to get the right look...

Charity shops and eBay are good places but you have to check regularly. Your dad might have something suitable already

Tweed jacket, shirt and trousers, maybe a flat cap.
Suit and tie
Overalls with a belt and cap

Have a look on Flickr at past Goodwood Revivals and you'll see lots of ideas

Unless you want to go in the faux forces or spiv look, he will have something in his wardrobe for sure. Go mad, maybe a new flat cap & cravat biggrin

We went last year and the whole family dressed up. The girls were dressed from clothing at Asda but my wife and I used a film and theatre dress hire warehouse in Cardiff called Script to Screen. They had masses of period costume. I went as an RAF officer and my wife as a 1940s housewife on a day out complete with gloves, hat and bag. They were really helpful. It's a bit of a trek for you but I expect there's something else around you.

Chaps really don't need to go to fancy dress shops to get the look. Just wear a tweed or pinstripe jacket, old fashioned tie or cravat, brogues, braces, flat cap or trilby etc. it's easy. You really don't want to be going as Elvis or a Beatle hehe

Don't do the white overall thing, too many do and it is as though they couldn't be bothered to think about their outfit. Leave the white overalls to the real mechanics and marshals.

Dad's Army as a theme? lots of war time costumes to be seen.

Must agree with you there. They started to appear about 5 or 6 years ago and now they have become very common place.

IMO they are more appropriate than the Services uniforms.

For real mid twentieth century motor racing authenticity why not go for a navy blue boiler suit preferably black and filthy with grease, sport a grimey flat cap and carry a part smoked roll-up behind your ear - you must have a badly cut short-back-and-sides as well, and appalling teeth.

I suspect that the white overalls thing is a misremembered fantasy outfit as the only man who wore white overalls back in those days was the painter and decorator.

In fact in the mid twentieth century in England a white outfit would have marked you out as a homosexual. Particularly if worn with a brown hat.

Standard pre-war mechanic's or fitter's overall was white. They only changed to darker colours with the advent of WW2.

I have white overalls and am not ashamed to say so. My biggest bug bear is CLEAN white overalls!! As if a mechanic would be CLEAN!! Shove down your engine bay for a few hours (or minutes depending on car) or roll around in the garden for a bit. They are very good at keeping the wind out which can be useful in September. I like the retro brown SHELL overalls too. If all else fails a three piece tweed suit and tie works well but do remember a hat as they were much more commomplace then.
