Grandstand Viewing at Goodwood for Revival
Discussion
Hello folks!
Yes it's early but I'm just putting together a present for my father and other family members to go to the Revival in 2012.
We'll be staying locally at a friend's having either driven down on the Thurs from Aberdeen or flown to Gatwick. If the weather looks good we'll to take the DB6 and join the Aston Owners going but it's a long haul for the old girl.
What I was looking for guidance on was the best viewing for the racing? Having never been to Goodwood before I really don't know how it actually looks from a spectators point of view so would love some opinions from the PH crowd. We like to be able to smell the Castrol R!
If grandstands are the way to go then fine but is a 'roving' ticket worthwhile?
Hopefully in 2013 i'll be racing there at the back of the field (as i'm slow, not the car) in a Lotus Cortina (Stretton prepped) so 2012 will be a sighting year for me. Just recently back from the Algarve Classic at Portimao (as a spectator again)but mind is made up that the LC is the way forward for me.
Thanks in advance for any tips.
Cheers
James

i have never had a grandstand ticket and find the views great, obviously the grid grandstands might be the best if you are going that route but i prefer the banking on the first corner or a visit to st marys, i am sure others will have different opinions though.whatever you decide you will love it

If you're after a grandstand for watching the racing, then any of the stands apart from Startline are great. If you are coming for more than 1 day, I would advise the following.. Friday - entry ticket only and walk around the paddocks, stands etc as well as watch a bit of the practice/qually from the banks as the viewing's really good and it's not as busy on the banks on a Friday. Saturday - Entry + Roving Grandstand, this will allow you access to the three grandstands at Lavant Corner (excellent views of the circuit and airfield (for the displays) and there's a huge screen in front so you don't miss any of the action. You will also have access to the Lavant Straight grandstand which also has a giant screen in front of it. Sunday - Entry + Woodcote Grandstand, there's nothing quite like seeing the cars flying down the straight towards you and then onto the Chicane.
Also, don't forget to pre-order your programme voucher as it makes life so much easier and quicker when you arrive and you migth want to considder putting yourself on the waiting list for the GRRC if you're considering comingn to the Revival on a more regular basis as you will have better access and privilages as a result. It's unlikely that you'd get in next year though. try here for more info.. www.goodwood.com/grrc

Because of my name (and distant relationship to the great man) I actually got speaking to the organiser of the golf event the prior day last year but was recovering from a dislocated shoulder so couldn't attend. I may well dig out his number and see if I can get a reason to dust off the hickories sitting in the loft for next year though.
I'll definitely follow the guidance and get the programme pre-ordered. Nothing worse than sitting at an event not knowing who's flying past!!
I shall also take a good look at the GRRC. It would be atleast 2013 before I would be happy doing any door to door racing as i've a little practice to get first!
Now if you could just let me know how we squeeze our '69 Aston into the paddock that would be great.
See you in 2012!
I have never purchased a grandstand ticket, as it boosts the price of the weekend up. Plus, I you cannot seem to get good photograph's. as you will always get a metal frame from the grandstand in your photo's.
I always sit down at Madgwicks, at the top of the raised bit. As you get to see about 70 to 80% of the circuit. Seeing the cars/bikes coming out from the chicane, start/finish straight, heading rolund infront of us at Madgwick and heading down to Lavant. Then briefly see them into Woodcote etc. Plus, there is toilets, tea/coffee/food there aswell.

The classic car park is now pre 73, so you can squeeze in there (ticket is free, request when buying entry ticket)
I've never had a grandstand ticket because if I'd paid for one I'd want to sit in it most of the time, but also want to see other parts of the circuit and the paddock and you can't do both at the same time!
The start finish straight and the bends at each end (Woodcote & Madgewick) get very busy but if you go over the other side (St Marys area) it's comparitively quiet, you can either walk there or get the tractor 'bus' round, but this gets very busy heading out in the morning and back at the end.
Traffic will be busy unless you're very early (before 7.30am) or leave late (after 7.30pm)

Hi James, as has been said it depends on how many days you and your parents are going to attend. I started out just attending on Saturday but soon decided to attend for all three days. As James (G) says, you can use Friday for walking around and looking at the paddock & attractions, then watch the racing on Sat & Sunday. Personally I take a grandstand seat in Woodcote on both Sat & Sun but that's because we (my wife and I) are usually knackered from all the walking on Friday so just happy to sit down! Parking for your father's DB6 will be in the main car park where the pre-73 car display is formed. There are also GRRC memeber's classics on display on the bank at lavant and in the car park beside the Shell building. As you have not been to the Revival before it's hard to picture all this but imagine something like 2 or 3 acres of classic cars on show! Indeed one could spend hours simply looking at the car park Oh and do dress for the occasion even if it's brogues, chinos and a flat cap.
