I know its late and that there are a few different suggestions flying around on different routes from London after the A3; such as A283 and A286. We don't want to get stuck behind a coach and crawling traffic.

But what would be the best road for having a good blast and opening her up on, as my friend and I are heading down in his dad's old V12 Ferrari?

Many thanks,
Andrew

Whichever road you take, there will be traffic making its way down. And police. Lots of police. They are often on the way out of Petworth in the 30mph. And watch out in Duncton and all the villages on the main roads en route. Revival weekend probably isn't the best weekend to hope for empty roads wink

As stated- mind the constabulary, but having said that, personally I haven't seen too many about when I have travelled down for an 8am arrival at Goodwood.
There is a thread suggesting there is likely to be roadworks/ traffic issues on the 283 so the 286 might be the best bet. It's not a bad road, but like the 283, it's single carriageway and threads its way through various villages so drive responsibly!

Alternatively, depending on what you are driving, you might like to give the new Hindhead tunnel on the A3 a try...I'm sure my V8's will sound good through there...

Whichever route you choose there's a good chance you will spot a few interesting cars along the way.

If you go through Petersfield to South Harting, the road out of South Harting climbs up to the top of the downs. It's very windy and I believe used to be a hill climb venue years ago. I like that whole route, TBH. After you come out of the woods, the road flatens and straightens out for the last few miles towards Lavant.

I think you'll have to turn left before you get to Lavant because they like people to come in via Singleton, but it's all signposted. Have fun.

I drive over it all the time in the 7 treating it as one, but I never knew it's history of being one. Google doesn't throw up many details.

Normal roads will be policed & choked.
Try A24 to Worthing, A29 to Bognor, A27 to Chichester Goodwood.
That's a blast!

I drove down the A3 this morning and the Petworth road was a nightmare. Drove back using the South Harting route and it was a blast (plus I got to go through the tunnel for the first time). So if you're going south from the A3 I'd say ignore the signs taking you off the A3 and through Petworth. Carry on through the tunnel and use the South Harting route (no speed cameras either as far as I could see - but right to be sensible through the villages).

The day itself was fantastic. Can't recommend it enough.

I doubt you'll be doing much spirited driving within 20 miles of Goodwood but now Hindhead is tunnelled it would be a crime not to get the walls vibrating given the choice of transport!

Even without the tunnel I'd definitely do the Petersfield > Harting route, it's probably 6-8 miles longer than the A286 or A283 but I imagine a lot clearer. The A286 down through Midhurst is normally a half decent driving road but gets snarled up with any Goodwood event, and going all the way across to Petworth on the A283 is likely to be just as busy. Not sure if you can do it on the Revival weekend but when I used to go down we used to turn left at the mini roundabout just as you're heading out of Lavant towards Chichester and take the lanes through and either come out along the back of the circuit (which I suspect will definitely be closed off) or at the bottom of Goodwood hill by the golf course.

Thanks for the clarification dad. I remembered you once mentioned it had been a hillclimb but I didn't know when.

I live in Petersfield and when my wife was pregant, we decided to use Chichester hospital for devlivery. We checked the South Harting route against the A3 and actually discovered it's quicker to go down the A3 to Portsmouth and then east on the A27.

However, tomorrow we're taking our Turner to Goodwood so we'll be taking the scenic route!

Yup, we live between Liphook and Bordon and my dad lives near Chicester, A3 > M27 is several miles longer but 5-10 minutes quicker assuming it's clear, just wish they'd sort out that abomination of a junction between the two roads down near Havant, then it would be another few minutes quicker. Getting to Goodwood though there might not be so much in it as you can cut across from Lavant on the Harting road and need to go all the way along the Chi bypass if going A27

Couldn't agree more - I go through Havant rather than tackle that.

My daughter was born at St Richards as well, and I deliberately decided not to use the A27 to get there. There are no exits between Emsworth and Chichester. I didn't want to get stuck in a traffic jam with no way out!
