Hi,

Does anyone know the part number of the momo or nardi steering hubs that fit the S4? (i'm guessing it is the same one for all steven's esprits?) I'm trying to change my steering wheel, but the 6 screws are in so tight (and i'm guessing threadlocked) that I have bent 2 allen keys trying to get them loose! As such, I'll probably have to buy a new hub as well as the new wheel...

Thanks!

Anthony
(from the Land Down Under)

PS. My Esprit is a '94 S4

Anthony,

I just completed my steering wheel change to Momo on my V8 as well.

As for part numbers, did you purchase the wheel via Lotus or is it a standard Momo steering wheel? If it is the Momo steering wheel made for Lotus specifically, you can get all the part numbers for the assembly on www.espritfactfile.com. Click on the "Parts" section on the left menu then "Steering Wheel". All the part numbers will be listed there along with step by stem instructions on changing the unit.

If you purchased a standard Momo off the shelf and you are fitting it into your Lotus, take a look at www.hybinette.com/lotus/index.html. Click on "Safety Mods." on the top menu then "Steering Wheel Installation". This site will give you step by step instructions as well as needed part numbers to retrofit a Momo Steering wheel not specifically made for your Lotus.

Hope this helps you out. Good luck with the change, you'll love it when it's done!

Many thanks YK!

all the aussie esprits i have seen don't have the gm wheels with the airbag, later models may have them (i haven't seen one in the flesh for ages and can't remember), but my 1994 espirt doesn't, and i'm sure all the earlier models don't have them either...mine actually came with the nardi "lotus original" 3 spoke wheel. I like the look of it, but it is a fraction too big and blocks my fuel and oil temp gauges, a 320mm size wheel would be perfect! i have one already from another car that i checked it with and it would sit such that ALL guages are in view...

as i mentioned, the 6 screws simply WON'T come off! they have threadlock of death on them! as such, it looks like i need to buy a new boss kit and change the wheels over by just attaching the new wheel to the new boss kit and changing the whole thing at the centre nut... bit of a waste having 2 boss kits, but not much else i can do as even the lotus service guys in sydney couldn't loosen the screws..

thanks for the websites, they have great info for the wheel change! australia doesn't have anywhere near the same support in lotus parts as the US and the UK and accessories shops here won't even bother trying to get the parts as there are so few espri here....i am going 2 order the boss kit over the internet and ship it here... you're right, can't wait to put my new wheel in!!

Anthony

Anthony,

I forgot about that. You are correct. This is my 3rd Esprit and since my last one was a 93 1/2 with the GM wheel, I just assumed your 94 had the GM wheel too. Only in the states we have the god aweful GM wheel. Just to meet safety codes. Oh well, I guess it's understandable.

The 3 spoke Nardi wheel is a nice wheel to begin with. I now have the 3 spoke Momo which I personally think looks MUCH better then the GM wheel.

It's not a large group but there are some very helpful people that owns an Esprit in the states. The support has become very good over the years. Especially due to people like Karl with his Facts File Web Page. Hopefully it will pick up for you down there as well.

Good luck with your wheel change... Post a pic when you're done so we can all see it too...

3rd esprit, wow! i love the esprit also and know that i will own other esprits in the future, its an obsession...

have just requested a quote for the boss kit (and a few other odds and ends) from SJ Sportscars in the UK and am waiting on them... I am planning to put a Momo "Jet" steering wheel on...love the cardon fibre bits on it, they will match the dash...i like the existing nardi, but think the jet will be perfect in terms of the look that i want..as for size, i am going for a 320mm(12.6") wheel, it will be just right for the dials (mine has no boost meter), i know, i know, spoilt aussies, we get the nardis already and we STILL want to change them!

am trying to get a momo button with a lotus badge on it for the new wheel as the nardi button is the same size (i think) but sticks out about an inch due to the rubber cover over the spokes...

yeah, the support and information over the internet has been amazing, i know that i would still like the esprit, but would not have reached the obsessive levels that i am at now without the information from all the helpful individuals that post the photos, info, links, etc. about their esprits on the internet....

will put some photos up as soon as i get it all done...

Anthony,

You are in luck! I just happen to have a Lotus horn button for sale for the Momo steering wheel.

You see, when I changed my GM wheel and replaced it with the Momo wheel, I purchased the button. As luck would have it, since I didn't want to find the Isuzu Hub, make shift collar, as well and install an resistor (to turn off the air bag idiot light) in the swap process, I opted to pay for an over priced Momo Steering Wheel from Lotus Europe.

As luck would have it, not only did I get this great chance to pay 4 times the amount in compaison to the off the shelf Momo wheel (Rrrr...), I found out the buttons are different too.

Much like the road wheels, the OEM Momo from Europe is just a little different enough to make it a propriority part for Lotus.

I was going to put it on E-Bay and auction it off but if you are interested in the Momo button, let me know. Perhaps we can work something out for you...

As for the "spoiled Aussies"? Yup, I'll have to agree with you...

Seriously though, this is why Esprits are so unique. They all have a character of their own...

And i wondered why parts are so hard to get, on an esprit no 2 parts are ever the same!

As you say, as chance would have it, I just got a reply form SJ sportscars and the hub that they can get won't fit on my 1994 S4!!! looks like i may have to drill the screws out of the existing hub! of course, the risk is then that if that gets mucked up, the boss is useless and i now have a car with a broken steering wheel that CAN'T be replaced, ie. a car that can't be driven!.... the joys/character of the esprit...

would still like to buy the horn button from you in case i somehow manage to get the wheel off as i REALLY like the momo jet wheel and this other guy in Australia is trying to source the momo hub for me.... anyway, let me know how much you want for the button and the postage... you wouldn't happen to have a boss kit also that would fit a 1994 S4 in your bag of tricks somewhere would you?

oh yeah, would you happen to know if the nardi and the momo screw pattern (6 bolts) are essentially the same? i was told that the wheels have 2 different patterns in terms of the way they sit, but a momo or nardi hub would fit both momos and nardis, you just have to take the hub out and re-centre it with which ever wheel you use... (hope this isn't too confusing and you know what i am asking)

Anthony,

I'm not positive what the Nardi hub on your Esprit looks like but I am certain about the dimensions on a Momo hub. They are 2 3/4" diameter six bolt hole mounting pattern. If this is what your Nardi hub looks like, then it will work on both the Nardi and Momo. Then yes, all you have to do it re-center it.

As for your hub, I wish I remember where I read it. I took notes on it but it is at home and I am at the office right now. The Hub you have in your car is actually a OEM part off an Isuzu if I remember correctly. I'll have to verify this information for you.

Have you tried the local auto part store? Another hub that works on your car is a model made by "Grant". It is avaialble at the local auto part store here but I am not sure what you guys have down there so I don't know how to steer you in the right direction.

However, once you get the correct Grant Hub adapter, all you need to do is purchase a Grant to Momo adapter kit and you are ready to go! Also avaialble at any local auto part store.

Regarding the Lotus horn button, I'm pretty flexible. I was planning to sell it on E-bay or leave it on my office desk as a trinket...

Send me a reasonable offer to my office e-mail address and I will most likely accept it. I'm always willing to help out a fellow Esprit owner no matter where they may live...

yeah, am a little unsure about the whole thing... the only thing i know 4 certain is the momo wheel that i want on it and that i am going to need a hub, existing or replacement to get the wheel on there!

thanks for the info, if u can find out about the isuzu details i will try ordering it through them.. basically, the parts stores here are very helpful, if the car is a holden or a ford... apart from the regular "lotus? who makes that car?" the other response is "sorry, can't get anything for that make".. there are one or 2 lotus specialists though and i am trying to get some quotes from them for parts..

i have no idea how much horn buttons cost as i have always gotten them with my wheels...will have a quick surf on the web and email you a price at your work email address...
