esprit-- to buy or not : if so which one, and where to find
Discussion
for a very long time now, i have admired both the porsche 928 and the lotus esprit
with regards to the latter,an early wedge would probably be my first choice , principally because i like the look of the interior better
however , i am no mechanic , and hate it when my cars dont work perfectly
am i asking for trouble by considering an esprit?
which of the 4 pot cars would be the most reliable and the most enjoyable to drive?
all the websites, and classic car magazine adverts that i have seen , have not thrown up any particularly special esprits for sale
where would you recommend loking?
thanks

If you are not too handy with a spanner an older Lotus like this will empty your pockets unless you are very lucky. I had a 1988 Excel for some time but there was always something that needed doing on it. Parts prices are reasonable and cheaper than a 928. You need to drive one too as compared to today's cars the n/a car's not that fast. Look at a lot before you buy one
The Esprit is the same as most cars the later the model the more sorted the car (in general)if its a looked after example.
i.e The Later G cars have the far superior and reliable HC engine.
The Stevens shape all have the HC engines and are at bargain prices currently and quite simple mechanically.
The S4s is arguably the ultimate combination of the 4 Cyl cars it has all the benefits of the development work for the V8 (Brembro brakes, interior, exterior Styling)with the ultimate 4 cylinder engine developed for the Sport 300 ltd edition.
Early V8s had a number of problems associated with the new engine, clutch and gearbox which were gradually addressed by the end of production (still a ? over Gbox).
It depends what your budget is, there is an optimum Esprit for most budgets.
My opinion is the drivers car would be the Esprit.
Cheers Mike
