This is shear curiosity (although it was triggered by another dangerous trip into the classifieds), but how big is the step up from the later 4-pots (na or turbo) to the Esprit V8s? And where does the engine come from? Is the V8 harder or more expensive to maintain? Is there any iteration of esprit that's noticeably easier to live with than the others?
Quite a few more $$$ to service a V8, plus another turbo to take care of, larger tyres, bigger brakes to service etc. Lotus developed their own 918 Engine. They are generally very good if you look after them. The last of the four cylinders are the way to go such as a GT3, S4, S4s imo as they are cheaper to run and a bit more reliable. People make the mistake of driving a V8 though and feeling more power which is addictive. There loads of info on www.lotusespritworld.com about their quirks.
Good luck

If you don't mind spending a bit more on the car and its maintenance, go with a 1999-2003 V8. There are a few people I know that once they tasted the V8 had to have it. There is an almost instant source of power that is absent from pre-V8s. I think the paragraph by David Walters on the espritperformance site

sums it up very nicely.

I'm finding this very desirable. Get rid of the silly decals & put the correct wheels on...........

It was on flea too with pictures with original wheels. They should have put a decent V8 in there back when the S3 was introduced.
