How difficult is it to replace the passenger side window motor unit inside of the door?

Not very difficult - just fiddly. It depends on the model you have but on mine I took off the interior door panel and removed the bolts holding the motor in place. One of these was also used in the door restraint so you have to be careful. A lot of fiddling about to get it past all the other bits in the door followed by more fiddling to get the new motor in place again left me with frayed nerves and damaged fingers. Tighten all the bolts again and that's all there is too it. Not hard just time consuming.

By the way - make sure you get the right motor as they used a different number of teeth on the motor through the years.

Mine is also an 88 model. Before you replace the motor make sure that it is that part that has gone wrong. It is much more common for the switches in the door to burn out. When the car gets old and the windows get sticky it is easy to hold the switch down for longer than you should and burn the contacts. Use a multimeter to check the switches on both sides. You still have to remove the door panel but it is a lot easier to get at and to change the switches than the motor (as well as considerably cheaper) if that's all that's wrong!
