Wrong letter for the year?

Seen this in the classifieds, i'm not sure how this could happen;

How could it be an 87 with a G pre fix? Surely it should be either a D or E registration? Anyone know the story behind it?

This guy has some interesting Esprit's from time to time, i gather he buys a wreck and makes it proper again?
