What's the deal with de-cat pipes? Do you have to replace them for the MOT but it's legal to drive around without the cat at other times?

Don't know about legal or not but I need to replace the all exhaust system for my 89 Normally-aspirated. Could someone tell me if the kit is Ok for my car and which pieces do not need to be ordered. Just for my info, could someone tell me the price of the all line from the motor? Thanks a lot

Andy,

In the States you have to have cats on the car if it was originally equipt with them from the factory, for emmisions purposes.

Omitting the cats will give you a decent HP increase since it gets rid of that cat restriction in the exhaust. Its a very popular Muscle car thing I have run "off road" pipes for the last 3 years on my firebirds, and camaros, and have never had a problem with the police.

Its actually very easy to get away without running a cat on a boosted car because there exhaust note is usually pretty sedate. Also if a cop pulls you over what are the chances that he will know where and what to look for on an esprit to determine if you have a cat on or not.

I will definitly run an "off road" style exhaust on my esprit once I get around to it.

Good luck.

i was speaking to marcus at moto-concept about another subject, but the cat pipes in this article came up.. just to clarify - these pipes DON'T have a cat.

This is what marcus said: "Our cat replacement unit has NO cat inside. The fat part you can see on the pics is a sound absorbing unit, not a cat."

Other option is to go for some hi-flow cats instead.

Several discussions on this subject recently on the uk esprit yahoo group.
