Rev counter is typically driven off the coil so this combined with loss of power suggests you may have an ignition problem? Maybe wiring fault, igniter pack failed or coil breaking down.

You don't mention the age of your Esprit. I found that a loose connection from the "inversion switch" (Battery->Inversion switch->ignition amplifier) was responsible for similar behaviour on my '83.

Cheapest fix yet !!
