When changing gears on the SE, when you have to make long changes, as in wait for the cogs to engage, is that a sign the synchro's are worn or is this something horrendously more expensive?

Should i look to have the gearbox oil changed or what?

This is probably a vague description but its the best way to explain it. I don't think the clutch is on its way out, its only done 30k miles.

Anyone else had similar and know of the easy fix?

Thanks.

I would say that if the synchros were worn that selection of gears would be the problem rather than the speed of the gearchange.

Simple checks would be the cable and actuator shaft alignments on the back of the box, oil level (TAF-X does make a difference).

IIRC you can inspect the clutch without removing the box too.

Most problems are related to 1st/reverse selection from stationary; clutch drag etc that seems to get worse as everything heats up.

My clutch was changed at 37k and that seems to be a reasonable average figure.

Do you mean that you can't make really fast gear changes without scrunching (is that a word?) the gears?

When a VERY experienced test driver at Lotus drove my Esprit at the factory recently he said that the noise was due to a worn synchromesh.

That said as long as I'm not slamming the gears though the box at lightening speed the car drives fine.

Thats more like it, i knew it wasn't the clutch but suspected the synchro's. Thanks for that.

Yip first to second is a slow one. For fast change downs rev matching to slip it in quicker certainly helps yes
