In general I would say they are reliable, providing you get one that really has been serviced properly. Several people have had bad experiences with cars that were never really sorted and subsequently became money-pits.
Its the usual problem of 'a supercar having supercar maintenance costs however much you pay for it'.

When I bought mine the independant report said it was a good one. Despite that I still found 5 or 6 items that needed attention. Some were done by a well known independant and the rest I have done myself - its not a difficult car to work on. Still, that meant 2000 euro of work before it was up to standard.

Running cost is a definite FAQ, so I have listed all mine:

Since then the last A service with new pads was 800 euro so thats around 23k euro over 7 years.

I would recommend that you read the rest of the site too!

When you've finished that, come and join us on the Lotus Esprit Forum yes

Depends if your really anal or not at keeping it in top condition. Mines always got something going on, a new light on the dash or trouble code etc. If you dont keep on top of it, it can lead to 5 or more things to fix very quickly. Had mine over a year some of my costs in my profile. Touch wood but I have got off pretty lightly, others not so lucky.

If your handy and dont mind tinkering you will enjoy the Esprit as said above they are easy enough to work on.

Hey...

I use my 2000 V8 SE on a daily basis, been a fantastic and reliable car so far (touch wood).

Petrol consumption is terrible though (in town driving), getting around 17mpg and that's me taking it very easy.

Can't stop wanting to drive it though, esp with the weather getting better.

I agree with previous comments, these cars need a lot of care and attention. I came from a TVR T350C so it was like for like with respect to servicing, warm up etc etc.

Go for, great cars!

Am thinking of one getting one or a 4.5 Cerbera. Would 1999 be a good year?

I am mad about cars, but Esprits in particular, and presently use a 2.2 turbo almost daily. If you buy a good one or get it sorted out and respect it, they are exellent in all aspects. Problems seem to occur with the nuts working on them creating new latent problems in the process of initial maintenance. I do all the work myself and see the results of the nuts behind the nuts.
