I ran a 1998 V8-GT for two and a half years and 22,000 miles. Having written it off on black ice earlier this year I had cause to tot up all the bills and service records for the insurance valuation. Came to £14,700, although that did include a few grands worth of cosmetic upgrades. Ouch.

The insurance valuation came out at £18,000 however - exactly what I paid for it! Which was a result.

Such is the draw of the car however I bought another one 3 months later, this time a 2001 model. The PO had spent virtually nothing in the two years he had it apart from routine servicing. I've done 3,000 miles and its been absolutely perfect. All I've done is put two new front tyres on it and had an A service.

Basically its luck of the draw mate, but if you are suckered in I guarantee you won't regret it.

My car here btw:

Hi there,

Don't get carried away by the low starting price. It's not going to sell for £10K. More like £20K is what the owner is looking for. Problem is that Ebay only attracts buyers who want a bargain.
Just because you are only paying high teens for a supercar doesn't mean it has Mondeo running costs, it has £60K running costs. You're looking a £1-2K a year providing nothing major goes wrong with it.

£1k to £2k would be for servicing and repairs. Add insurance, tax etc.

Main dealer servicing is between £450 and about £1100 every 6000 miles, depending on which service. A new clutch will be about a grand as well.

Agree with Dave, not trying to put you off but many people buy these cars second hand and expect costs to match. Quite the opposite. Its a used car with maintencance bills of a new supercar! Its why you see so many end up in barns as people cant afford their running costs. Bottom line is dont go there if you cant give the car everything it needs - WHEN it needs it smile

And I agree it is the luck of the draw!

As Snuffy said,

It's basic running costs not insurance, tax etc. If your tight on budget then you should think again.
I've had mine for 3.5 years and the last 3 years I have been extremely lucky and running cost have only been £500-1000 a year until this year when a few things started to go wrong. All sorted now but wallet a lot lighter!
Also things like getting a pre 01 car will save you on road tax. Iam paying £185 a year and £550 insurance based on limited mileage of 3000.
I have a 99 car but have upgraded it to look exactly like an 03 onwards car. Pictures can be found on www.espritperformance.com

Kylie and Dave are both correct.

The way to look at it is: If you think you can just about afford to run one then you can't.

This is what it cost me to run my GT3, my Sport 350 was much higher: www.adrianmugridge.co.uk and find your way to GT3 running costs.

Spot on snuffy.

I have put all the running costs so far for my V8 here: http://www.lotusespritworld.com/EOwners/PeteHizzey...

When I purchased the car it had a full specialist inspection report and despite this I still identified a lot of work that needed doing. Fortunately this was before parting with any cash and was negotiated off the purchase price. Have slowly been working through all the detail that needed attention and having done about 75% myself it came out to 2100 euro.

The important detail with these cars is that you MUST keep on top of any required maintenance. Do that and they are BIG fun yes
