2001 Esprit noise

While driving I notice a noise which sounds like a nail in a tire. It is not.
When the clutch is pushed in it disappears. Also with my hand on the shift knob
I can feel a vibration which corresponds to the noise.
Any ideas? Could this be a speedometer cable rubbing inside?
