Must have taken a stone between the belt and the pulley. Lucky it was in this position or I would not have seen it...
Anyone else had a near miss like this

OMG very very lucky. I always thought this set-up was a recipe for disaster with open belts and no covers. Now I have seen it to beleive it!!!!
I had several mechanics over the years who worked on my 89 Turbo all say the same thing, asking where the covers are? And did not believe me when I said there wernt eek

No, got one of those but it seems a stray stone isn't held back by it. Just bad luck I suppose, or good luck depending how you look at it.

Its a good chance to get an annoying oil leak sorted around the front of the engine.

tell me about it, a year ago I spent £X,000 on a rebuild, didn't desperately need it just a head gasket but had the parts so why not. This would have been catastrophic...

Just saw this thread and have to say from first hand experience, yep, good thing you caught it in time. On the way to Colorado in 08 my vacuum belt came apart and lodged under the cam belt. Bent all the exhaust valves. A regular check of ALL belts is a good thing to do.
