Hi guys

Hopefully someone might be able to help me with my high RPM problem. I recentley had to have my engine taken out so that the exaust manifold could be replaced. (2 cracks found). Also had the turbocharger serviced and a 360 degree thrust bearing installed. 'A' service done as well.
The problem is that, from cold, the engine idles at 1,300 RPM, then settles to about 1,100 RPM when its hot. There is also some RPM tumble when accelerting from idle. I understand that the engine should be idling at around 700 RPM when hot.

I tried connecting freescan to my car, but i have the old serial connector, and the adapter i got, doesnt seem to work. My laptop doesnt connect at all frown

Any ideas as to what i should be looking at to fix this problem.

I not expert on the 4cyl engines but most idle problems are related to the IAC valve either sticking or having forgotten the base setting value.

IIRC the reset for the IAC base value is done via the freescan link. Which doesnt help...

So do you think its worth changing the IAC?

My S4 sometimes idles at 2,000 but then will drop to 900ish after a few minutes, sometimes 30 seconds or so, i've never found anything that actually makes it do that. Different temperatures, different weather (very hot & very cold), if ive just stopped from fast driving or pottering around town, it just sometimes decides to idle a bit high then drop to normal.

I've had it over 5 years & i've just put it down to thats what it does.

I also had the exhaust manifold done last year, left the engine in though, it can be done regardless of what some people say!

I've had the same problem with the high idle on my '98 GT3 but it normally sorts itself out after a while when, usually when the engines been stopped and started again when warm.
As for the Freescan not working on your laptop, I've recently bought the USB Freescan package from LotusEspritWorld and it took a while to get it to communicate with my laptop, I was told by someone far cleverer than me that because Freescan is an old programme it will only connect to a COM port with a number of 9 or less, my next available COM port was 17 so I needed to do a bit of uninstalling, it now works and I'm getting loads of Data, I have reset the IAC and BLM to factory settings and the car seems to run better than before especially at idle.
Hope all this helps.

Thanks for that,

So i am not alone with slightly high RPM. Sounds like i must get freescan working somehow. I have pulled out my old, first ever laptop, and it actually has a serial port on it smile Managed to get it connected to the net, so am running windows update, and hopefully will get freescan working on it.
Unfortunately, my car is be shipped to me abroad now, so i wont see it for another 2 weeks. As soon as i get it though, i will definately try and connect to the ECU before i do anything else. So many sensors to look at. I have a feeling that some might need fettling....

Cheers guys smile
