Hi mate, I sold my much beloved 89 Carbed Turbo two months ago as there has been a major change of plans for me below. I had it for around 5 yrs and needed to sell it to help put toward this puppy below. My 89 only took 2 weeks to sell, it was a beauty and sold it to a really nice guy who is taking great care of it.

So this is a 1999 Sport 350 No.23 of 50. Pics are in my profile. First pic of it in transit before being unloaded and stuffed into a container. Lower pic is someone elses one as I dont have any decent pics of mine yet, but you get the idea biggrin

There is a new emissions law that has been drafted, which claim to be going into effect next year to basically not allow any car older than 2002 into the country. There were a few of us kiwis who had long term plans of getting our much desired toys out in the near future but its now bought forward. So we are all on the band wagon rapidly shopping!! Talk about the best xmas pressie ever man!!!!

It arrives end of Nov and will be the first real S350 in New Zealand, someone told me from Oz that it may well be first in the southern hemisphere!! But it would be cool if someone else bought another out to NZ to share the experience with me smile It will be a handful to say the least and havent got much sleep of late, very excited biggrin Otherwise all else is good still doing my art, keeping fit etc.

And you?

hehe Cheers Alex, I always wanted one of these since they were built and seeing guys buy these and post pics and stories of their P&J made me green with envy... so now I have one and I cant bloddy wait!!!
You pretty much nailed it in terms of getting it through customs, compliance should be hopefully straight forward. Its decatted with straight cut pipes, but it should pass our emissions/noise levels. NZ is not as strict as USA etc on that and similar to UK. I have spoken to our Land Transport Agent for these cars before I bought it so I knew that atleast this step of they way should be ticked off - in theory anyway (fingers crossed!). Importing Lotus cars to NZ is so much easier than to OZ, I just need the paperwork from the previous owner to prove it was his name in the UK and thats it. Nothing too complicated. Will keep ya updated.

How exciting.
I am happy for you. I had often wondered about what all the old timers are doing and driving these days.

If I ever get back into an Esprit it will either be S4s of V8. If it is a V8 I will probably have to seek your advice and you will probably be far ahead in the learning curve by then.

Regards,

Calvin

Hi Calvin, I wish you would get a V8 so we could learn together. It appears there arent too many people who are actually confident pulling their own engines and rely on specialists to do the work. The four banger in comparison were so much better/easier to work on. In saying that though theres plenty of info help I have received already from people to assist with the V8 when it arrives. It will be a steep learning curve for sure. It will also be the first time I get to play with my OBDII software ready to plug in, which I never had to worry about that jargon on the Carbed Turbo!! No doubt there will be a few surprises!
All the best,
Kylie smile

Kylie,
I know what you mean about the differences in working with the 4 cyl vs the V8. Jim and I had the advantage of living near several well known 4 cyl mentors Tim Engel, Keen Young and Dave Cammack from the turbo list. While at one of the North American LOG a few years ago I meet Sanj,John Welch from WC, Johann and a few others. All knowledgeable people. I know only a few people who actually work on their own V8's and the actual hands on knowledge from people nearby is pretty limited. As the price of the V8 continue to slide in the USA more of the hands on hobbists will aquire them and there should be more and more people that will work on their own cars. There are some specialized tools that maybe required like the clavis tool that is used to adjust the V8 T-belt. I used to just check the 4 cyl belt just by the feel of it instead of reading the harmonic with the Clavis (I think that is how it is done?).

I will have to wait just a bit longer till my new part time venture takes off. I am currently running a diagnostic service for swimmers and tri-athletes that is taking the area by storm.

I look forward to my future return to the hobby car world. I also had a short detour as I have a son almost ready to drive. We have been looking at getting a Saleen Focus as we know someone who is selling one for the price of a regular Ford Focus.
Your new car looks great and if you ever need assistance I know a few V8 people who work on their own cars and I could get you in touch with them. Personally I am unfamiliar with the V8. I have heard there is accelerated clutch and tranny wear caused by the higher hp.

Calvin

Good luck with the business Calvin. Anything with regards to ironman triathlon etc you will do well if you market it well, it just gets bigger and bigger all over the world. I have top elite ironman competitors wanting their frames/helmets airbrushed so these guys have money to burn.

Well hopefully I might see you hopping into another Esprit soon anyway. Nothing compares to these cars. I have been keeping active on LEF too, to absorb all the useful tips and stuff in general so all good.

I have for the most part migrated to LEF and the only reason to post here is keep up with what some of the old timers have been up to. There has probably been more activity here because of this thread than they have had in a long time. It is a far cry from the old days when there was heavy daily activity. But the host of the site failed to anchor the resident experts to this site and many just moved on. After all why post if it takes days to get an answer. I just mostly read LEF these days as the novices of the old days have become experts of today and they have answers to many of the questions these days.

I have noticed that a few 4 cyl people have moved to V8's. I have also noted that clutch wear is on the rise on these models compared to the 4 cyl cars. From what I gather somewhere in the 25-35K mile range. Seems a lot of the V8 have had the clutch and flywheel replacements around that range, some even at lower mileage. Do the UK SP 350's have the limited slip? We have not really had enough information in regards to what maintenence and parts failure issuses the V8 face at higher mileages. I think the highest mileage Esprits I have seen to date were ones around upper 30's/lower 40's K miles (virtually all mention a new clutch). These cars have been selling in the 30+K in USD which has been driving the 4 cyl SE price to the low 20's USD. Used Elise price has been dropping too with some resale price dropping into the upper 20's- low 30's.

As for my side business I have been hooking up waterproof telemetry sensors to swimmer/athletes and the readings look like medical EKG graph which is overlayed on a slow motion underwater video of a person swimming. It monitors force readings that detect power lift offs and wasted motion. We can tell the exact motion or cause of a swim stroke anomoly that if corrected allows a swimmer to move through the water at fastest possible speed for the energy expended. We know just about all tri athletes weak point is swimming. Pretty much a scaled down portable version of what they use at the team USA olympic training canter. Not sure what the Aussie's and NZ athletes are using as they are really into swimming.

I was reading somewhere that only the Sport 300 and X180-R came with limited slips. The Sport 300 had a geared torsen type and the X180-R had a clutch type ZF LSD? Someone said the S350 had an open diff like all other Esprits. Clutch wear is higher but heard of guys getting high miles on a kit which is great. I guess it depends on how they are treated. My car has had a replacement done but in the inspection test it has a very small judder. This can also be caused by letting the car sit and not been driven on a regular basis and parts sticking, or definately on its way out.
I am counting on a nice Kevlar clutch replacemnt in the next year which we can get here really cheap and installed for $3K NZD. This will last heaps longer.

True, the Sport 300 had a helical, and the X180-R is a clutch type ZF LSD. The Sport 350 was a standard open diff.

I have always been here lurking in the shadows just reading. When Karl Franz from the fact file who I owe a wonderful Lotus ownership experience first directed me to this site it was rather dismal with days if not more than a week in between postings. After talking Jim (AKA Lotusguy) and a few others to join in there was a period of heavy postings. Sad to say that most of technical guys hardly ever post here anymore.

It appeared that everyone sold off around the same time. I think Jim is with the Porsche Boxter gang. Jim got a car his wife could also drive, something with a triptronic shifting. I drove his Boxter it was okay but shifting was sort of weird, a bit weak in power and it was not what I was used too. I talk to him once in a while but not like before.

It would not take much to kick start some life into this site if that is what one wanted to do. The LEF is a little different and bit more segregated which maybe a mistake as many people are crossover experts that sort of stay in their own model areas.

I don't even know if this site even has a moderator anymore. I thought the moderator would post more, keep the site supplied with a bit more pep and spend some time promoting this site. They should make Pomoz the moderator as your thread had generated the most posting to date. It is pretty bad when there is a bunch of early October postings on the 1st page subjects.

Pomoz I think we need to find a way to get Calvin into another Esprit scratchchin

Re the silver bullet, its going down through the middle east yikes but it should be at Port Louis soon and then its next huge journey is across to Melbourne then Auckland. So I will have to google where that storm is frown

ears

Any more info on this Kylie?

My V8 is now on 47k and the clutch was replaced around 30k.
Was planning to replace the turbo oil feed hoses (dissimilar metal corrosion) next year and thats an engine out job so the clutch could be done at the same time.

Hi there, I will have to find out more details (spec etc) as its bought and installed by our service agent. All I know is that he gets a good deal from a supplier here. So will try him tom and ask for more details.
I know quite a few of the V8 owners here have them and are quite impressed.

A few of the V8 owners and a couple of USA SP350 have limited slip. The Kevlar clutch is a good idea. As long and the tranny is coming out are you going to crack the case and take a look at dears and syncro?

Hi Calvin, yeah be crazy not to. First thing I am doing when the car gets here is to refresh all the fluids and oil, be interesting to see whats in the tranny oil. I dont think theres TAF-X in there going off the records I have so far so no doubt those copper coloured swirls will be evident from syncro wear.
Am still not sold that TAF-X is meant to be better for long term wear. In any case I better make up my mind if I am going to use it next time round as I have to get it in from PUK. God theres been some wars over the last few yrs about this stuff. I do back the stuff and tell everyone to use it, but it shifts like crap which you think must be worse.
