please help! fans wont turn off ???

hi everyone, I am looking for a point in the right direction. I am thinking I probably need either a relay or maybe a temperature switch but dont know for sure. And if I did need one of these maybe you know of a cross reference part I can get at the local auto parts store rather than having to order thru lotus and have to wait.
Last Friday I gave my 2001 Esprit a complete wash including under the hood , under the bonnet, complete motor , etc.. The next day my cooling fans would come on about every 10 seconds and run for maybe 1 second before doing it all over again. Now when I start it the fans run the whole time and do not shut off until I disconnect the battery.
