Just had a test drive in the S4s, a very fast car. The clutch pedal is very heavy, as a result I don't think my wife could drive the car. Has anyone been able to modify the pedal so as to reduce the force required to operate the clutch? Thanks

Found exactly the same thing when I started driving my S4s. After a month you get used to it and its not really that heavy (only in comparison to other cars which IMHO have very light clutch pedals which spoil you when you sample the Esprit's).

One thing you need to be very aware of though is that the clutch on an Esprit demands a different driving style to other cars (price you pay for such a powerful supercar I'm afraid). You should not slip the clutch at all or abuse it (never drop it above 1500RPM),when stationary at traffic lights always sit in neutral never in gear. New clutches are expensive (£900-2000 depending on the dealer/mechanic you use). On the 97 V8 Lotus used a twin plate clutch which is much better then in 98 introduced another mod which makes the clutch much lighter.

I know an Esprit owner who's wife drives his Esprit with no problems at all.

Hi Dan,

I've owned my S4s for 2 years now and always assumed the very heavy clutch was standard.

What "new master & slave cylinders" did your dealer fit & who is the dealer.

I'd love to have a light clutch on mine which currently needs a new plate but lotus are out of stock.
