Tony,
Do you have a manual? Everything you need, including illustrations, is in the manual and you should have one before starting any major work on the car.

The coil mounts vertically in the front-right corner of the relay box. The amp mounts horizontally on the floor of the relay box, just to the right of the coil. Look for a bolt hole there. A single bolt goes down through the amp, through the floor, through the eyelet of a grounding wire, and is secured by a washer and nut below the floor.

Tim Engel

Tony,
Try the Service Notes, Section LD, Page 52.
LD.26. - Ignition Box Component Location Diagram

And in the Service Parts Manual, page 17.03B and page 40.17A.

Section LD applies to the Federal, Bosch Injected model so there are lots of things in the picture that don't apply to your car; however, the location of the coil and ignition amplifier should be the same.

Similarly, 17.03B & 40.17A apply to Federal models, but the locations should be the same.

I only have access to Federal manuals, but all the Lotus manuals follow a similar format. Look for an L_ section (LA, LB, LC, LD... etc) that applies to your car and browse. Similarly, my manual is missing 17.02 in the number sequence... perhaps yours has a DOM section in that sequence that mine doesn't. Browse.

My manual does have Section MB - Esprit S3 & Turbo (DOM/ROW), which should apply to your car. Page 9 shows the location of many items, but not with a lot of detail... a little more imagination is required. But after glancing at the Federal sections above, you should be able to fill in the gaps in illustration MB.2 on pg 9. Coil and amp should be obvious. The "TURBO RELAYS-'87 MODEL YEAR ON" are probably mounted on the flip-down cover to the relay box... similar to the arrangement shown in Section MC, page 28, upper-right (once again, Federal).

There's lots of info in the manuals, but they're very poorly organized or indexed. It's worth just sitting down with them and browsing page by page. I did that and added index tabs so I could find things of interest later without playing hide and seek again.

Good luck,
Tim Engel
