Will it work with the new gearbox ?
Discussion
I am told that the main difference in the sport 350 engine ECM compared to the standard V8 is that full boost is allowed in the first three gears rather than being limited to 50%. When I went out in Superdave's V8 the difference in the first 3 gears was substantial and I am putting this down to having full boost on all gears. I was toying with getting the sport 350 conversion on my '97 V8 now that I have the beefed up gearbox but I am concerned as to if it will work (see "How does it know ?" My first gear is now more like standard second with second being more like standard third as the ratios are taller and closer with a taller final drive. See als "Gearbox fixed". My queastion is: Bearing in mind the factors discussed in "How does it know?", will I still get the same stunning difference as with the standard 'box ? At least I won't snap the input shaft !
There's no gear selection input to the ECU .. so it must compare the wheel speed via ABS sensors to the engine speed and work it out from that.
Logically thinking, it probably works out MPH / 1000rpm and has different boost curves that it looks up within different ranges. I guess only Lotus (and maybe marcus / johan) know if these can be tweaked - I see no reason why they couldn't!
If your first gear had the same ratio as a standard second, it would just think you were in second and give you that boost curve.
Or just go for the red-race and you get full boost in each gear (I think)!
