See other thread about engine fault, help!
When they smashed up the contents of the cat to clear the blockage, they showed me part of the cat which looked a bit like it had melted. They said this might be old damage, but if not, it might indicate a rich mixture or a mis fire. The car is a '97 V8 so are either of these things possible without the MIL light coming on? I thought that the engine management stopped this kind of thing or is it possible it might happen? If it did, what could be done....there is nothing to adjust! Not without a computer and a heck of a lot of knowledge! Any suggestions or ideas ? Thanks!

It is a common problem. Turbo cars run hotter and richer.
Take it in sride and remember the problem areas to help others out. As per the other post many people have pointed to the cat matrix as a problem even in the 4 cyl cars.
My cat was just a gutted shell as we have no inspections where I live.
Turbos do a good job silencing exhaust noises so many run straight pipes or just use resonator tips without a muffler.

pity the 4 pot doesnt get silenced by the turbo, at least not mine. Took the exhaust off once and moved the car, sounded like a Spitfire plane starting up...
Actually it is not that bad running straight pipes as I know several who had it done. It is quite loud straight from the turbo but it is not that bad with pipes to the regular tailpipe points. It does sound just a bit louder but it is not real objectionable. It also creates a flame out the pipe under certain conditions startling someone behind you. Some who have straight pipes then add resonator tips to pad it down bit. The exhaust noise is not as objectionable as some of oriental tuner cars.
I have been running stainless hyperflo cats on mine for about two years now. The stock cats just don't cut it IMHO. I use the TUBI stainless silencer (muffler) as well. Looks like stock except more shiny. I prefer having some sort of silencer because I don't want my Esprit to sound like my neighbor's Dodge pickup when it starts up... Just my opinion.
