my 89 esprit turbo has been off the road for just over a year now as i took it off the road to replace the cracked manifold and worn turbo plus a few other small jobs. i have completed the turbo and manifold swap and now got the engine back in the car and running, but with one problem the water pump now appears to be leaking my question is how hard/easy is it to swap while the engine is in the car as it looks abit of a pain. any help and advice on this subject will be appreciated

Access is poor and does add to the inconvenience, but it's not difficult.

Remove the alternator and it's triangle support bracket.

Remove the vacuum pump and move it off to the side, out of the way.

Remove the drive pulley to make the pump small enough to wiggle out through available spaces. Doing that is easier while the pump is still bolted to the engine.

One top bolt sits right behind the rim of the auxiliary pulley. Sometimes, if you get lucky, and can sneak it out between two teeth on the pulley. Sometimes it's necessary to remove the pulley.

Half the pump bolts are accessible from above, and the rest from below. Once the pump is off, removing it from the engine bay requires a bit of maneuvering; but it will go out the bottom at the front left corner... but only if you removed the pulley as noted above and move the vacuum pump off to the side.

Good luck,
Tim Engel
