It seems the alternator for my 91 esprit has run out of life. Are there any alternate replacements other than factory? If so, has anyone had any ill experiences with them?
Thanks

Hi,

There are a couple of alternatives, but why are you looking for one? You did get 12 years from the one you have and it can be rebuilt for 1/3 the cost of a new replacement.

Look in your local yellow pages and you're sure to find a rebuild service. They will thoroughly test and clean your alternator and replace the brushes, regulator, diodes and bearings for probably less than $75.

I had mine rebuilt last summer, turnaround was a day and the cost was $65. The alternatives are not a direct bolt-up, and require that you make some modifications to get them to fit. Unless you're running all sorts of add-on electronic gadgetry and need more amperage, a replacement over a rebuilt is really not necessary. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring!...Jim'85TE

I had my alternator rebuilt after the voltage regulator melted into it on my '89, the Valeo unit. Cost me about $100. As you know, a new one costs about $600 if you can find one.
