In the Dog house...again!
Discussion
Fifty metres from home and CRUNCH into second. Try again from third to second....CRUNCH! Looks like something like the 2nd gear syncro has bit the dust. New Esprit moves six months down the ladder ! Just when I thought she was doing well !
What is the most likely fault folks? It crunches both from first and third into second and very occasionally doesn't if you double declutch. Am I better not driving it?? Thanks

Could just be a shifter component getting loose... but it's probably the dog teeth on 2nd are broken.
DO NOT drive it unless you like having chunks of metal rolling around destroying all your other gears.
remove it, inspect it carefully, and replace the 2nd gear and or synchro ring, and possibly 1-2nd synchro hub.

oh dear, my heart goes out to you, been there.
so you have the uprated gearkit from Jack Knight, right?
did they replace the second gear synchro as well?
it might be worth checking the hydraulics from the master all the way to the slave as if there is a leak it will cause this although if its only in second then sounds like its the synchro. worth looking at as its a far cheaper fix.

my car is in for suspected head gasket failure, possible engine rebuild so I'm in a fix too...

Definitely not the hydraulics. Fluid is dead same as last week and crystal clear. Crunch on second is absolutely huge and shudders the whole car whilst other gears are totally normal. About one change to second in five is smooth with double declutching but CRASH !! every time otherwise. Problem also started instantly. One minute it was normal, then every single second gear shift went BANG!!!
As was already said, some 2nd gear dog teeth have broken off and the teeth are still in the gear cluster causing a difficult shift into 2nd. If you're lucky, they will eventually fall into the bottom of the pan and shifting will be fine again until the next one breaks. Eventually they will all break off and you will have no second gear at all.
This is what the broken dog teeth look like:
and here is the second gear showing the missing dog teeth:

Well. We no longer need speculate. The gearbox has been opened by the car hospital and it is well and truly wrecked! Second gear disintigrated on removal, the syncro has gone and the input shaft has a crack that beggars belief as to how it stayed in one piece. This is at 45K very gentle miles. Be warned!! The technician says he has not seen a V8 do more than 50K without a gearbox rebuild. Obviously the penalty of using a 250 bhp gearbox in a 350 bhp car !
An input shaft is £900 and second gear is £500. Rebuild is £1,000 plus and you wouldn't put it back together without new bearings. All in all, over £3,000 to fix it and put it back in the fragile state it was when it was born.
For only £4,000 it can be rebuilt with taller crownwheel and closer ratios with a Quaife limited slip differential. Seems foolish not to do this!
Yipee !! An upgrade for the price of a repair !!!
