How much do you have to top up the coolant level?
I think it is normal to loose a little although once a week seems excessive. Do you have leakage signs from the small black hose towards the rear chargecooler box? Also check the front core.

Had the same thing when I bought my SE. The obvious problem: the chargecooler pump. On top of it being gone, the seal may have gone aswell. Will leak the chargecooler liquid to the engine oil, and will vapourise it.

Check carefully, or have an electric pump instead, because the seal is hard to find and to replace.

I was loosing around 1 litre a week until I replaced the chargecooler pump impellor. It's almost impossible to see that it is losing it from there because it leaks onto the block. I'd bet a pound to a penny that's where the problem lies.

I'm having my chargecooler pump replaced right now do to this. I too notice no leaks, so my mechanic says two things could be happening.

Either it is leaking, but collecting in the basin under the engine then burning off, or wrose, it is backing up into the oil system.

If that didn't make perfect sense, perhaps someone could explain it better...I'm sick as a dog and hopped up on painkillers

Any of you people smell the aroma of anti freeze cooking on the block. When mine was leaking from the small overflow tube on the box. it made such a smell and leakage stains.

Do not run the old pump without coolant or it will make a lot of noise. Use a block off plate or plug from the 89 non SE. It's where the old distributor used to go on older engines.

Excellent advice. John at WC Engineering sells custom-made blockoff plugs for just this application, see his website at www.wcengineering.com
