Oil and Battery Dash Lights Faintly Illuminated at Idle
Discussion
This is quite normal on many motorcycles ( which also have high revving engines ). In fact, in my Honda Owner's Manual it actually says a slight flickering of the oil pressure light at idle when warm, is fine - so long as it goes when you rev the engine.
HOWEVER, the fact that you are also getting the battery light may indicate your idle speed is too low - that you are, in fact, as close to stalling as is possible.
Try blipping the revs and letting them fall quickly. If it stalls, you have an idle mixture problem.
Raising the idle speed may be all you need to do....but I'm not sure how easy that is on a car/ the Elise.
If you have a S1, the idle should be around 875 or so. I am presuming the Stack is not a perfect instrument, so aim for 900-950 to be safe!

My X 1/9 used to do this with the battery light and it grew brighter on revving the engine and I was told it was common. Check the oil every day for a week or two and if it starts every time without external battery conditioning, it may well be a sensor or electrical phenomenon. I had problems with my coolant temperature sensor with a wandering needle. Offhand, I'm not sure where the engine oil pressure sender is....check the workshop manual...Could it be a global electrical thing ,ie something to do with the wiring behind the warning lamps themselves, like a miniature version of the Winter winking tail lights on older cars?
I get this with my GT3. Oil and batt light can flicker dimly on first start up. When you raise the rpm the oil light goes out but the batt light becomes bright.
It takes a moment or two for the batt light to go out completely and when it does you can tell that the alternator has woken up due to the extra whine from the belt.
I don't for a minute think it's a mechanical fault. I also don't think I'm ever likely to be bothered enough by it to fix it!
