My 89 has a clear coat finish. I had the car repainted in various sections and got the painters to check this out and do the same. I am unsure of the earlier ones sorry.

Its easy for you to do a spot check yourself anyway. Get some polish and rub a tiny section on a cloth oppostite colour to the car. If you get some colour residue its not clear coated UNLESS the clear is badly worn off by years of polishing and its gone through to the paint work. Hope this is some help.

Thanks Kylie

My car is a 1997 GT3, so old paint (relatively) shouldn't be an issue. The car certainly looks like it has a coating over it. Incidentally is clear coat just an interchangeable name for lacquer?

Lacquer is a single pack spray system which can either be clear or colour based used on much older cars. It is different to two pack paints used today. Now knowing what year your car is I am assuming you have a modern paint system with clear coat. Hopefully someone might chim in with a similar car as yours as say what the paint system is.

I always thought that solid colours like Calypso red or White were single pack, whilst metallics like Azurite blue werte two-pack, is this correct?....What colour is your car, GT397?

hi

my car is mustard yellow. I've spoken to a paintshop and they said no need to lacquer, just compound to a shine. I've got the materials so will try that and can always coat it if im not convinced.

Its definitely Not Lacquer...so be Greatful!

Lacquer has the nasty habit of Crazing (Spider Cracks) and its a Bitch to Sand.

I've fine sanded and compounded and i agree it doesn't need a lacquer. I suppose it looked like it had a clear coating but now i've finished, it even feels like it has a coating
