I just took the memcal out of my car and am surprised to see a chip that is not the factory one.. it has a sicker S4S/98 on it. pic here too let me know if you recognise it.

actually it is soldered in so it must be a Lotus chip.. maybe a replacement from dealer in '98??

You want to fit a 28 pin chip holder or just blank the existing EEPROM on the MEMCAL and reflash it with new code.

not necessarily. I've de-soldered and removed the original Lotus chips and soldered in new Marcus or Sanj chips.

I actually socketed mine so I can swap them anytime.

so can anyone identify the chip with that sticker on it?

I'd guess it's S4s code from '98. Definitely modded by someone. FYI, the S4s MK V code that I normally supply is from June '99.

well.... not a bad guess hahhaha.. seeing as it says "S4S 98"

under the sticker is a clear circle in the chip so you can see inside.. the other chip I have is solid... does that clear area mean anything?

anyway I have ordered that chip holder from the internet so checking out the differences between chips should be easy .

Bear in mind of course that the S4S wasn't in production in 98. The GT3 was and so were the V8 engined cars, both of which were avaiable with the 98my dash (and other updates) from the end of 97.

Do more digging!

The clear window is to erase the memory using an ultraviolet light... Keep it covered! Flourescent lights actually emit some UV light and can damage the memory of the chip over time.

The other chip you have is either not re-programmable, or more likely it is an EEPROM, which is electrically erasable and programmable.

It says they retain data for 10-20 years... hmm does that mean older cars (or any electronics)- pre-'86 may be in for trouble?

Probably only if they're disconnected from a 12v supply for 20 years.

I finally got to install the chip I bought 2 years ago.
If you remember I challenged the guy who sold it to me. He claimed it was a USED genuine level 5 chip. I suspected it was a clone and was supported by everyone here.
I was cautioned that there are 2 versions of the level 5 chip and one might cause problems.

Anyway I put the chip in my new easy change holder and went for a drive.

IT WAS TERRIBLE. mostly never got the boost gauge over 3/4 and occasionally got to near 1 bar. the chip I posted the pic of (the one that was in my car) pegs the boost gauge at the end all the time.

the car felt slower and less driveable.

Anyway.. I guess this is a caution to those that buy used chips. Good thing I got my money back way back then.

I guess I finally have proof that the guy that sold me the chip is a crook.

I bought my #2 chip from the same "guy" and it has been perfect for the past 2 years.

does your chip allow higher boost levels? what does your boost gauge indicate?

Since you changed more than one thing on the car, chip holder circuit board & and chip program, how do you know which one is causing the problem? Is it the chip holder, or is it the chip?

Also didn't you say you took the sticker off your chip? Did you also take the sticker off your "copy #5" chip? If so you might have erased (at least partially) the programming inadvertantly.

the holder allows the original memcal to be used. It is a small board that connects the original memcal pin for pin except for the eprom. It has a quick change socket to install the new chip without cutting or desoldering the original one.
Neither my original chip nor the other one have been partially erased.
I am trying to help here, providing feedback on the chip I bought. It is not as advertised. I am an engineer and I am willing to bet my education and reputation on the validity of my results.
