Alright time to get some more heads into this problem.

About a month ago or longer I started to have problems with my Esprit where it would not stay running. It was determined that there was no spark. I went in and replaced the pickup coil in the distributor along with new wires, cap, rotor and a new coil. For the pickup coil and coil I went with a new pertronix unit suggested by JAE. Well the first ignitor lasted 5 mins before overheating itself. JAE sent out another ignitor (figuring the first was faulty) after replacing the first I installed the 2nd one and the same thing happened again. I'm thinking of going back to a stock setup to get the car running again. Any ideas why these Pertronix ignitors keep burning up after 5 minutes?

Not at all! I have was forced to change as the D45 dist internal pick up is no longer available as far as my 3 month search could turn up. Mine played out and the car would no longer hold spark. I have been running the Pertronix now for three years in my 88' with no issues.

The only time I have ever seen one burn up as described the Ignition amplifier had not been removed or bypassed (This was on a Jag)- IE: The two wires from the Pertronix pickup in the dist were not running straight to the coil - but were going through the Ignition amp. I corrected this to be set up like my car, and as far as I know there has not been any other problems... I did modify the base plate on the Pertronix pickup a bit to make room for the wires curling back through the dist body... during advance they appeared to not have enough room and I was worried a bit about chaffing through.

Other than running through the Ignition amp (and it should be by-passed or removed), I would suggest the issue may be your coil? Shot in the dark, but my coil does not require an external resistor. Some coils do - and they all look alike! Be sure that if your coil requires an external resistor you have one in place. Not having one will def. create some burn up problems.

I'll post if I can think of anything else...

Thanks maybe the coil I got was the wrong one. I will have to call the supplier since that is the setup he sold me. I'm not running through the amp. I had cut the wires on that come out of the amp so I know that is not running anymore.
