Get underneath and whip out the bolts holding the mounts to the chassis. Then use a long length of old climbing rope to fashion a sling around all four mounts, attach to crane and hoist away. Worked for me
Oh, you'll need a long-reach crane, too.
You can leave the tailgate on as long as you detach the gas struts and get someone to hold the tailgate vertical, out of the way.
I found that removing as many bits as possible from the engine in situ made it a lot easier (water pump, alternator, crank pulley etc) - when I refitted it all the ancillaries were in place and it was a swine to get back in without hitting the body... maybe if I'd enlisted some help

thanks ian. sounds routine enough. when your car was apart, did you happen to notice an extra tapped and plugged hole into the oil gallery? everyone keeps telling me there is one, and i suspect such rumours were started by people without turbochargers, because that takes up one of the ports.

Looking through the pics I took of the engine rebuild, there is a large blanking plug screwed in to the r/h side of the block where the gallery passes no.3 main bearing.
Behind that, alongside no.4 main, is the blanking cover that is tapped for the oil pressure gauge capillary. That cover has a boss that could be drilled and tapped for an additional feed... small bore, though, perhaps 1/4" BSP.

You can see what I'm on about in this pic...

i see it! super photo. thanks again. i'm gonna run a line from the plughole to an oil accumulator up front. the lines will all be rigid aluminum tubing with orbital welded fittings. the stainless steel braided hose has a rubber hose inside; so it ages just as quickly, but you can't inspect it. they sure manage to sell truckloads of SS braid hose regardless.
