Hi all

Took my '84 Turbo for a spin today and the usual suspects reared their heads.
Filled the petrol tank, but the gauge wasn't interested and slept through the whole thing. The petrol gauge has never worked. Any ideas?
Whilst driving on the freeway the tacho was having a party all on its own. I was cruising at about 120kph but the tacho needle was jumping constantly from 500 to 3000 rpm. Is this a problem with an earth?
I recently backflushed the radiator and added new fluid. The temp gauge used to sit on 90 degrees happily no matter where I drove. It now seems to think 90 is too hot and won't budge above 75 degress. Is this normal?

Thankyou in advance.

Sounds electrical. What work have you done on it resently? Sometimes my fuel gauge doesn't move if I refuel from the passenger side. I thought there was a leak or a fault. When I got into the next day it was alright. My fuel gauge also jumps just like your tacho. You need to find out whether the three are connected in any way, i.e wiring loom. Have you tried letting the engine run stationary for a while to see if the temp rises or at what temp the fans kick in?
Have you been anywhere near your binicle later?

1984 turbo,

I think you have two problems, maybe three and they are probably related.

First, let me spout what should be the mantra of every Esprit owner (are we all sitting in the lotus position?), now repeat after me... groooouuuunnnnd. Do this three times while contemplating removing all the ground connections to clean and tighten them. This is the source of 90% of the electrical problems on these plastic cars. As there is very little metal, you must be sure to have a good ground both from the engine to the chasis, but also the other 5 or 6 grounds that live in the car. Track down the ground cables and make sure they are clean (use emery paper to get the contact point really clean) and tight.

As far as your fuel and temp gauge, I think your voltage stabilizer has gone. One way to test this is to give your binnacle a sharp rap on the right hand upper edge, this often restores your gauges to proper working order for a while. The voltage stabilizer is a cheap part and not too difficult to replace.

If your fuel gauge does not respond, check the terminals at the sender itself located on the right hand fuel tank, remove and clean and retighten them, if all else fails, your sender unit is bad and needs replacing.

As far as the temp itself, remove and clean the terminal on the sender unit located on the 'T'stat housing. Also, did you properly bleed the system? If not, it's pretty easy for an air pocket to live right at the sender giving false readings. Also, at what temp do your fans trip? Hope this helps...Happy Motoring...Jim'85TE

84 Turbo, I have a similar problem with my car running at 75 degs, last summer it used to run at 90. I thought perhaps the thermostat was either sticking open or the previous owner had removed it. I replaced the thermostat last weekend, temp still exactly the same. i have no air in the system. I will check connections and earths etc, but I don't think its any of those because if I let the car warm up on the drive the gauge goes to just over 90 and the fans kick in. Is yours getting up to 90 when left standing? Mine only has the under temp problem when driving. The important thing is to make sure that the fans are working just in case the gauge is mis-reading. One possibilty somebody maybe able to confirm is that it is possible that a low ambient temp might affect it, but I thought that is the idea of having a thermostat??? My prime concern was damaging the engine as the handbook says optimum operating temp is 90, I don' know how strict this is.
Cheers, Jez U.K.
