I'm meeting up with Ross (Pinnock) tonight, i'll ask him more, see if they're doing any renderings.
He's an old mate.

Hard to believe Lotus would use an Esprit as a test mule for chassis components. I would guess that the design of the new car would have some connection to the Elise / Europa, not the Esprit.
The old Esprit would be an appropriate test vehicle for a new engine. That would explain the changes to the car’s exterior. Why would the new engine be a BMW?

Why is everybody considering a alternative engine when lotus has an extremely good engine at their disposal for the new esprit.(V8) This engine has cost lotus bags amount of money to develope and has been reliable plus can be increased in power with little hassel. If I was a lotus engineer I would have no hesitation on using their existing power plant that already has been proven.

Am trying to fit a BMW engine into an esprit myself just to see what it does.
Errm except I'm using an M5 V10.
Major modifications to the drivetrain ie total replacement with transverse 6 speed box
lol
should be interesting getting it MOT'd

Esprit body but uprated chassis. I didn't mean they would use the old bendy backbone steel thing, its easy to hide a new extruded ally chassis or composite thing under the old Esprit shell. If you think they're using the old tech to test the new gear it would be daft!!!!

I think that the V8 was about to cause too many emissions headaches for one and (own one I do) a lot of dealers haven't got a kind word for it! I think that the engine has always been the expensive disaster area (not always) for a Lotus of any type. I think that Lotus are probably of the opinion that< I am sorry to say, most new Esprits will be bought as quick return investments or because of their looks. I'll bet only a few will be bought for the genuine desire to enjoy an amazzing drive.
I am sorry to be so cynical, but I think it's true. That's why there are page after page after page of used Elises. These will have been bought by Yuppies wanting to be seen in the "must have" sports car. Now they have moved on to a TT or a Hummer having finally got sick of the fiddly roof and the contortionist doors!
Plus....As I have said before. It never did Mclaren any harm did it??

All of that said, when I am asked what make of engine my car has, it is with more than a little arrogance that I reply: "Lotus!" The use of a Lotus engine does loads to dispel the kit car image. Why not re-engineert the top end enough to justify Lotus cam covers. That way you get the best of both worlds. Reliable tested-to-destruction-made-in Germany-from-solid-granite big bits and dead clever diddy bits!

Correct toyroom. The 918 engine would did not have the capability of meeting emissions and the cost to try to get it to was prohibitevly expensive. Basically, because of the technologies involved (vvt of some sort, etc) an entirely new engine would have to have been developed.

Personally, I see no issue with Lotus taking another manufacturer's engine, massaging it, and then combining it with a well set up chassis with looks to die for. Isn't that what Colin always did?

I personally get great delight when someone asks me which engine did lotus use for their V8 to answer back it was designed and manufactured by lotus. Apart from the liner problem which is seemly sorted the engine was pretty reliable. Surely there must be some other transaxle that can be matched to this powerunit.

It does look, on closer inspection, that the front could be the new shape, if you look at the headlights?

Also, the rear lights, isn't the left hand light slightly higher than the right?

On second inspection, the rear seems to resemble the M250 in profile.............?

I agree. If this is just an Esprit in drag, why bother? Surely the best way to conceal new mechanical stuff is to put it in a car that is known to the public already, ie the Lotus Esprit. Therefore, there must be something under the disguise worth seeing as the disguise itself is drawing unwanted attention.....or is it???>..If you were hoping to make a fortune out of a nich market product which sells in comparitively tiny numbers, what better way to publicise it than to get a bunch of people fascinated with following around and photographing an old car with all bits of black card stuck to it! I could be right! Lotus, we have seen through your plan!!
Meanwhile, the front of the disguise is totally different to the existing car in a completely unnecessary way. It does resemble a lot of the "leaked"! ideas, however. Maybe it is a cooling system mule (or air con/climate)

Now I think we are getting nearer to the truth. Where did this picture come from? The price will have to be sub $100K or Lotus will lose sales to other more exotically badged marques. Like it or not, the survival of the new car and Lotus in the USA will depend on selling the car in large numbers to folks who don't really care about engineering and for whom the badge is all that counts. Take Rolls Royce. If it wasn't for badge status, they wouldn't have sold a tenth of the cars they have in the last twenty years. Why pay twice the price for a car which is essentially no better than a Mercedes CL? Badge status, no other reason! Now Bentley....that's another story

I've made that picture my desktop pic now, removed all the writing, the amount of people walking past desk have stopped and said, "oooh, whats that, that looks gorgeous".

It seems to be the favored design/shape amongst the car mags, i wonder if someone knows more than they're letting on............
