So let's say I install the electric booster pump. What do I do with the mechanical one still attached to the engine? Is there any danger in leaving it where it is disconnected?

You must remove it and use a block off plate or plug. I think the pump shaft gets part of it's cooling from the fluids. In any case if the shaft seals goes you will leaking engine oil and it will make noise. SJ has the part as the non SE Delco cars uses such a plug as that is where the distributor used to sit in the older cars.

You don't really want to leave it in, as the outer seal and impeller would quickly be destroyed by lack of lubrication. I suppose you could remove the impeller and outer seal (only).

WC Engineering (www.wcengineering.com) has blockoff plugs available for just this purpose, of nicer quality than the Lotus ones. Not sure about the UK, but Lotus no longer has them available in the US.
