I am about to replace the tyres on both of our S4s. We're in Aust, so we have the 'euro spec' cars, with the wide Futura rims.

I have two options that I am considering - Michelin and Pirelli.

For the Michelins, it's the Pilot Sports that are recomended by Lotus, as supposedly that's what the car was designed around.
For the Pirellis, it's the P-Zero Assimetrico's on the back and the Nero's on the front.

Two issues. Each car will do about 5,000miles per year. I don't want a tyre that will wear every year and need replacing.

Second, and most important. I took some terrible advice and put Yokohama's on my black S4s 18 months ago. Tyre thread is almost as new and the car has done 15,000miles since. But they are the most horrendous tyres I have ever used. The ride is much rougher than the Michelins and the grip is virtually non existant. The car loses the back end in a turn in the dry when I could do the same turn, at the same speed in the wet and the car would have no problem gripping with the Michelins.
This is what I am most scared about - no grip and rough ride.

So far, the best quotes I got for both cars is A$5,200 for the Michelin's and A$4,200 for the Pirelli's.

Has anyone run the Pirellis? Also, any other input would be welcome.

And the size of the Futura's is 235/40ZR17 on the front and 285/35R18 on the back.

I've been using Yoko AVS Sport's on mine, same sizes. I'm pretty pleased, though I'm not as 10/10th's as many folks out there, even on the track.

I use yoko A520's on my esprit, 215/45 17 up front and 275/40 17 in the rear and am very happy w/ the ride, not too harsh at all and there is excellent grip in the wet and dry. The compound is quite soft but they don't seem to be wearing excessively quick. Just my 2 cents!

I suppose you will have to make a choice in soft rubber/sticky/fast wear and hard rubber/less sticky/longer mileage.

I'm running pirelli P7000 on my M roadster 235/40/18 on the front, 265/35/18 on the back (Hartge 18x8.5" and 18x10") rims on theback)

The car weighs 1350kg (very similar to an esprit at 1380kg) and puts out 239kw standard. I've put 19,000 km on these tires so far- they grip superbly, even in the wet (I had 17" pilot sport mXX previously). And occasionally light up the rears from the traffic lights... (feels so good- love LSD- miss this on the lotus)

So I have to say, i think the michelins are very good.... of course I haven't tracked them... might wear out considerably faster...

I want the tyre that sticks to the road the most in any condition, but I also want it to last 20,000km (12,000miles) - that's how much each car would do in 2 years.

Sounds good. So you recomend the Pirellis? The yellow one still has the orginal Michelin Pilot Sport mxxx. As I said earlier, I am only thinking about the Michelins because that is what Lotus recomends, but the Pirellis sound tempting, although I don't want to make the same mistake that I did with the Yokos.

I am currently running Dunlop SP9000 as many of the V8's come with. I am satisfied with the performance of the tire.
