Hi,

My mate who bought the V8 Esprit, whilst driving down the Autobahn this morning, pulling a fair speed, he had to brake sharply and subsequently, somethings not right. His first thought was that the Turbo's had gone, but since there wasn't plumes of smoke bellowing out the back, wouldn't point to that. Apparently, having spoken to Lotus initially the first diagnosis is that when he braked, it shifted the CAT internals and has reduced the power output? I think this is due to the fact the previous owner didn't use it much, its had a nice run and got hot and it doesn't know whats hot it. Has anybody else had the problem?

I've sourced some replacements just in case, he's hoping its nothing more serious.

Thanks,
Rog.

Hi,
just had same problem I think. My car has been off the road for 11 months after some major work.
The first thinkg to go after the lay up was the Alternator but on its second long run last week it suddenly lost power over 4.5k revs under load whilst trying to pull away from another car.It was almost like hitting a net.The car would however cruise happily at 80 on part throttle.
Anyway once on the ramp we noticed one wastegates daiphragm was broken and the others flap was a bit stuck. We intalled new and reset them and then test drove the car.It was much better lower down but still had the high rev problem. After talking to Strattons service dept we checked the cats and the nearside was found to be blocked with loose material.I am now having a new system made as a lotus cat is £900 plus vat!Apparently this cat problem is quite common on V8s and so is the wastegate issue. It normallly happens at lower revs I,m told but who knows with a Lotus.
I get the car back Wednesday so Ill post a result then.

He wouldn't be the first V8 owner to have a knackered cat (or two!). Chuck 'em in the bin and all will be good.

The material inside the cats is notorious for breaking down. There are some good alternatives out there. I opted for hyperflos but I believe that PUK offer some stainless steel ones

Might as well get the stainless steel silencer while you are at it because the factory one is made of easyrustanium.

Thanks guys, the cars currently in Copenhagen awaiting diagnosis. From further discussions it sounds like the cats are shot to sh*t. Will keep you posted on progress.

Cheers.

A friend of mine had a bad cat and caused his V8 not to start. As soon as mine started to go (found during a routine maintenance) I opted for the hyperflos.

Well I think we diagnosed the fault, but I spoke too soon! The exhaust fabricator I left it wit has just called to say he cant remove the Lamda sensors out of the old cats(that is after he has ruined the threads on two).
One step forwards as they say ......

The nice people at Copenhagen Porsche/Lamborghini have diagnosed the right cat has gone, they're gonna hook it up to the diag machine and see what other fault codes are logged. Hopefully thats all it is.

Hi,
Its amazing what blocket cats can do.I got mine back today and its like a different car.We are waiting for the stainless cats though so I have replacement pipes in at the moment and despite everyones thoughts the CEL light has come on .
I should have replaced the standard cats a long time ago.
Good luck with your friends

Hardly the same as an Esprit, but I had a 4 Litre Jeep that had a rattly catalyst.

I took the exhaust off and knocked the guts out of the catalytic converter with a long screwdriver, a jack handle and a big hammer.

It was very theraputic and the Jeep sounded nicer and ran better without the bloody thing.

Looking at all the crap that came out, I am amazed that it ran at all.

Not having to worry about catalysts, emissions, lambda sensors, engine management systems and all that nonesense is one of the real advantages to running a fleet of old bangers.
