How do you program out(computer) the boost cut on a 1989 SE Lotus Esprit Turbo? Thanks!

Do you mean raising the boost limit? Are you trying to fool the computer with a bleed valve?

Cheers,

I am not sure..... I do mean raising the boost limit though. How is this able to be done?

hey there exotic, sound like you really want to know how to raise the maximum boost you are running (boost limit)

The boost cut is where the computer senses more than 1.01bar of boost for more than 3seconds (I think) and cuts the fuel to prevent damaging the motor.

I find the boost cut is not so sensitive- I run an apexi AVC-R model EBC and it spikes at 1.28 bar and runs a constant 1.0 bar.... and I have never struck the boost cut out. (however- I also run a 3" mandrel bent exhaust, with no cat & a straight through 3" muffler so there is next to no flow restriction- I also run Andy Whittaker's electronic pump conversion for the intercooler- seems to keep temps down as the cooler is constantly circulating at full capacity- not rev dependent).

as Sanj points out in his post on re-programmed chips- the high boost chips only really benefit/work if you have some important mods: higher boost from the turbo means the air is compressed and heated (adiabatic inefficiency of the compressor)more. Heated air is less dense for a given volume- not good for more power.

As you have a non-chargecooled turbo, you really are behind the eight ball in the amount of safe (and useable) increased boost you may run (most import/japanse turbo enthusiasts run MASSIVE air-air intercoolers to cope with the increased heat of the highly compressed air- they also cut away most of the front of their front bumpers to give the appropriate airflow. This would not be possible in an Esprit- however you can fit a larger water/air heat exchanger-lotus call this the chargecooler- in the engine bay in SE and above cars)

If you are going to run higher boost- addressing your inlet air-temp would be a very important consideration (you could consider "in-cylinder" intercooling- ie water injection to save space/complexity)

A few owners on Kato's website have done some of the above.

just a thought..

sydneyse,

Since when is an SE not charge-cooled? Lotus sold both 89 Turbos and in mid-year an SE model. He claims to have an SE. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

Kato has a web site www.lotusespritworld.co.uk where you can down load freescan. I think you can do some mods on that but didn't really look at it, as mine is a carbed turbo. I still need mine looking at as it boosts at 1.0Bar easily but haven't been driving it hard lately.
If you can't do any mods with this I think it's a worth while download to keep your motor in tune!

Cheers,
