I have a 1987 TurboHC (G shape).

The (standard) silencer is blowing.

Any suggestions for a replacement?

My requirements are as follows:

Stainless steel.
Standard appearance, well, maybe.
Not restrictive.
Makes it sound like a TVR...

Any alternatives to the standard silencer?

I am fairly anxious not to get into rejetting carbs etc.

I am located in Lancashire, England.

Thanks, Pat.

I believe you have a really nice product over there called Quicksilver??? It looked really nice. Also Moto-Concept in Germany has a SS Cat and Cat back exhaust. I hear they also have a SS header for the 4 cyl Esprit's. I would like one in the future, but that is in future as all hobby spending is put on hold due to the economy. Plus I'm mad at the Germans and French right now, so it's just as well.

Hi,
Iam in Merseyside and I use PMN Engineering which is only about a mile from my home. They can get hold of any stainlesss steel exhaust to suit your requirements. They do custom ones I think and the prices are good too. He is a Lotus specialist and is on the Club Lotus recommended list. His number is 0151 630 6101. If you ring, mention that you got the number from me. Pete who owns PMN is very helpful, I swear by him!
They are also good for parts as well. They do new, recon, remanufactured and used parts.
Hope this helps.

They even offer a trial service on your car.

Pat,

I don't believe that the Moto-Concept or the Tubi will fit the early 'G' model Esprits. The only good ones I've heard have been custom one-offs from exhaust shops. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

I would look for a silencer w/ a straight thru design I don't know if my exhaust is orig. equip. but it sounds great, lots of snapping and popping on deceleration. I believe it is labeled lunsford on the bottom? I can't be for certain.

Cheers,

Gday Pat
Great to here from another 87 HC owner ..we will have to correspond mate as i have a 87 HC about august first reg 87..still trying to find out how far from the end of production mine was.

Silencers... stainless steel

Just got one ... rear one
the rest of the exhaust system was stainless steel apart from the rear one that was standard.
Enquiring from Lotus dealers .. a standard mild steel one was about £187. cant rememeber if that was without vat or not.
I got in touch with SJSportscars (Devon)
i got a stainless steel rear £125 plus 2 stainless steel straps £15 .. all up vat and del was £176.85
i am putting it on this afternoon.
Have a look on their website www.sjsportscars.co.uk
... you can download a parts/price list on various Esprits.
They do 2 types of stainless steel rears..standard type or sports ..acording to Steve from SJS not much in it.
If you get intouch ..say the Alex from Norwich gave you the good oil.

Pat if you want to email me ALEX@ziar.fsnet.co.uk

Quick update.....

Bought a stainless silencer from SJ Sportscars a couple of days ago. Put it on the car this afternoon.

The silencer is more or less identical in appearance to the original, has nice rolled ends to the tailpipes and seems well made.

It is pretty much a straight through silencer. You can just see daylight through it, so it can't be too restrictive.

Sounds a little louder than standard, but is deeper in tone. Sounds rather good, actually. Doesn't snap crackle and pop on the overrun, but whoffles nicely.

Now just need to fit the new crossgate cable, linkage mod and replace the red hose, before looking at the tyres.

Never a dull moment....
