Does anyone remember some time ago pistonheads ran an article about a student who was doing a 'new esprit' as a design project? Well, he's just sent me his latest rendering of his design. I like it so much i thought i'd share it

If the new car looks anyway near as good as this i'm buying one!

Hethel needs to hire this student before any of the other car companies get to him. Nice Job!

Looks Good.

While we are on the subject of design does anyone remember a Lotus concept car called the Etna? I remember seeing it at one of the motorshows when I was a kid and thought it looked fantastic. I havent seen a picture of it for years though and it probably looks really wacky and outdated now.

Although I have high regard for this chaps obvious talent, I have to admit I don't like it as an Esprit of the future. It doesn't look original enough like the original Guigiaro or the later Stevens.

In my opinion the Esprits success was always mainly due to the shape that revolutionised the supercar look in the 70's - (and the rest Chapman's masterful chassis handling). We all know the features that let it down over the years and made it never fulfill its true potential as a top supercar. However, many later cars 'borrowed' the proportions or immitated the characteristics to great success. Lamborghini probably modernised 'the look' best with its Diablo and more so with the current Murcielgo. It's probably most like what the modern Esprit should have looked like - just look at where the intakes are on it and what the rear window/boot lid look like.

This lad's car is nice but has not broken new ground in the look, it borrows too many F355 /Elise characteristics for my liking. But that's my opinion. If it does look like this, I feel it will still be a successful car, but not a legend in years to come like the Esprit. But I agree Lotus should have a chat with him, after all he is no worse and probably a lot better than the designers Lotus used after Stevens.

Yeah its a amazing drawing, but its getting too much like those of other space age concept cars of other models to be released. I am a fan of keeping the true Esprit lines which makes it differ from other makes. I too think this drawing is looking more like a Ferrari.

Perhaps some of you others here should dust off a pencil and some paper. You guys here know more about the esprit lines and what you would like from it than anyone else?! So go on you fellas/gals have a go and post some sketches!!

I might even have go if I get a chance.
This could be intersting.

I love it! I know for a FACT that Lotus designs will never satisfy everyone so there will never be a perfect design and there will always be room for arguement. This kid has talent! I hope they give him a deal with all of this.

It's a well produced design and that drawing is stylish, but the lines are not so bold - it could pass for a Toyota or any other coupe. Sorry, but for me there isn't the 'what the heck is that' factor that came with the first sight of the Elise, Esprit, Europa and M250.

I love the renderings, but the proportions don't feel right and there's nothing in the design that really says 'Lotus' to me.

On the other hand, producing a coherent design is a fantastically tough job. Fighting the design into a style whilst keeping that coherence is even harder. Then rendering it to get across the feeling - this shows a lot of talent. I expect we'll come across Neil White's work sitting on a forecourt before too long.

I have to agree, the only Esprit bits seems to be the "C" pillar and air intake. A good drawing but I think the next Esprit should draw on the orginal for design clues but updated for now. I think Ford's GT based on the GT40 is a good example of this also BMW's mini.

Yawn.

Sorry, but this design just looks soulless. It's plain, and completely non-agressive, nor beautiful. All the Esprits had that great balance between elegant beauty and a look like it was going to take a bite out of that arrogant Porsche owner's ass.

This has none of that, but I hope the designers at Lotus have somthing akin to that spirit up their sleeves...

After looking at the pics on the Esprit world site, I'd say his original design was stronger. It looks like the feedback he got basically amounted to 'no, make it look like an Esprit' - ie. fewer curves, bigger overhangs and so on. Perhaps he should revisit that design - we'd expect Lotus to be pushing the current styling boundaries, not rehashing old cars, so why should he be expected to pander to people who like the old Esprit shape?
