86 Esprit - Timing Issue
Discussion
Hi,
I am new here to PH, although have been a regular ar yahoogroups and LEF. This problem I am experiencing has dumbfounded many a person and I am hoping for some great insight.
The diagnosis on my 86 Turbo continues. After replacing the warmup fuel regulator and correcting some vacuum problems, the next issue seems to be one of timing. The car’s timing is set to 28 degrees. After the warmup sequence completes and the vacuum switches over, the car advances itself to 50+ degrees. Reset the timing and the same thing happens. This happens at idle without even driving the car.
Any thoughts?

Take the auxiliary drive shaft pulley off and check to see if the woodruff key has eaten away at the pulley from the inside - I had this problem on an older Excel and it caused many hours of head scratching before we found the timing problem. The shaft would move where the pulley was worn and move the rotor arm as a consequence. In my case the pulley was out of true which caused the problem.
