Take a look at this Turbo Esprit upgrade.
For 90-95 www.mjmturbos.com/Cosworth-Lotus.htm
For 80-88 www.mjmturbos.com/LotusTc0301.htm

As has been said before. The Turbo isn't really a problem with the Esprit. If you did upgrade the Turbo you'd need to change the ECU chip to get anything extra from it. Then you'll need to worry about the effect increased boost would have on the gearbox.

The current Turbo will handle increased boost to take you up to over 300bhp. Maybe only worth it if your turbo dies!

Anybody welcome to disagree.

Kato,

I am in complete agreement with your post. I'd also like to add that I have seen several Esprit owners posts questioning this guy's competance on Esprits and one which relayed a problem for having done business with this guy. Both these posts were on the Yahoo list. I came away rather leery of doing business with him. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

Most people are content to stay factory setup to their
Esprit. Others like to go beyond the 280hp barrier.
I don't see this turbo upgrade of mine as a hindrance to stop what you would try to accomplish.
The less hard the turbo has to work to compress the air, the lower the temperature the air coming out of the turbo. You can work the turbo less hard by running less boost, by improving the pressure drop between the air filter and the turbo, or by having a more efficient compressor wheel. You can also reduce the pressure drop in the intercooler, which allows you to run the same amount of boost in the intake manifold while having a lower turbo discharge pressure.

As you know, Esprit power gain comes from the cooler, denser air the engine breathes.
During steady full throttle operation, it pushes induction temperatures down to 170° F, resulting in an induction air temperature of around 140° F. When the engine & the turbo isn't working so hard, the chargecooling system is operating at less then full capacity, the induction temp drops 70-85° F. At full throttle, the engine is capable of turning that cooler, denser air into greater power. It is at these times when the Esprit motor is capable of short-duration power figures up to 280 hp. This is where the factory Esprit turbo is maxing out....just a short time.
The power edge gradually drops off as the cooler, now working at capacity, lets the induction air temperature slowly rise until is stabilizes at the 140° F level where the engine makes its normal 264 hp. This means, unless you've been running at wide open for about a half minute, the full 280 hp will be available.
Half a minute 280hp? well, this is The is where current Esprit turbo is turning and maxing out at
approx. around 127,000rpm. This is the point where the
the engine, the turbo, the chargecooler are working to the max and in danger of detonation.
The analogy of my explanation is similar to having a fuel injector working over 80 to 100% compare to having the injectors working at just 40% at full throttle.....all the time not just a minute.
Of course, boost isn't free. There are things to be altered like the ECU sychronization and fuel system to get a proper air fuel mixtures. My upgrade turbo is for the people who would like to go beyond...the rest can stay.
For the two of you, I wish I can send you dozens of
emails inquiring the upgrade turbo. This is the way I can probe there are people thinking beyond 280hp.

One thing...I am not looking for arguement. I have no time for this. This is my last statement. Someday,
you might need me and I will try to help.
For the meantime, if you think you both know about
forced induction, you can go to my yard and pick
up some turbo parts to cool your head....free.

Just be careful, I just saw a big rattle snake
in one of the turbine housing.
